Timing on a 1.3 FC

As a newbie can someone explain how the timing is set on a 1987 1.3 engine? is it the thing that looks like a distributor? my car will not run , but will occasionally backfire out the exhaust while cranking... is the timing off?... also what does the FC mean? are they different models or runs?
Thanks

Welcome. The CAS (crank angle sensor) is used to time the engine. Have you read the stickies? The FSM (factory service manual) is available for download from many sources and is linked in the stickies; it will tell you exactly how to set the timing. You essentially rotate it just a distributor.

FC, short for FC3S, is the chassis code for the 2nd generation RX7 (86-92).

I have read different articles on how to do this....the only concurring statement I have found is ... aligning the marks on the CAS body and re-insert as long as the crank is set on the yellow mark? so doing that will it set it roughly so it will at least start the car? there are so many conflicting statements .... one article they claim you have to open the top of the CAS and make sure it is pointed in a certain way blah blah blah ... also I have read different posts as to where the timing needs to be set... at anywhere from... 5 btdc, as much as 20 atdc .... they all can't be right.... where are these stickies you refer to ? out the factory door, stock settings is all I am interested in ...getting any good info from the web is frustrating to say the least ...
Thanks
