Those two Belts/Straps in the trunk area (88 T2)

Okay I give up, is there any way at all to get these things to lay flat, or store in a proper way that's out of the way of putting things in the hatch?

I see that they have a metal slide/clip SOMETHING part on them that hints that maybe there is a way to lock them together in some fashion. for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get them to look clean. (I'm one of those guys who extends and buckles the seat belt on the passenger side when it's not in use just because it looks nice to me, these belts are driving me nuts!)

What have other people done to keep them from flopping around?

Is it work just taking them off?

It's been a while since I've looked at the back of an FC, would you be able to take pictures and post them?

The cargo straps go in an X pattern. If the weather is nice tomorrow I'll try to get out there and snap a pic of what they look like clipped together.

I understand what you're saying. They look messy just unfastened in the hatch. They do go in an X pattern as previously stated. My FB has them and I never mess with them. My FC has the package tray in the hatch and a speaker box under it. So you can't even see them.
