NY Test Drove an 89 RX7 Today!

So I test drove this Really nice rx7 from a fellow RX7 Club member.
It was super clean inside and out. The engine bay was very nice. It looked like the car was in storage for quite some time. But when it came to the test drive... It really didnt feel how I expected it to feel. I was on the highway in 2nd and just gunned it but it felt very sluggish. It didnt feel unresponsive, it basically just felt slow. Its n/a so I figure around 150hp. I was thinking it could be like a really worn out clutch or something? Or If its suppose to be that way for a stock non turbo S5? Any Ideas?

I think I know why!
It could be worn apex seals... the car is all original.

the exhaust is probably caked and semi plugged if it is original, also probably lacking a tune up which would help it run more proper.

That could be it.
I also read that it may be the 5th and 6th port. It said it could be frozen or stuck and its suppose to open at higher rpms to have better torque at lower rpms. The owner said it was garaged for a long time before he bought it. And said he never took it passed 3000rpm. I think this is most likely the problem because the engine did appear to be in great condition.

you can try to move the port arms by hand to see if they are frozen or not.

Have you had an rx before? If you were cruising around 3000 rpm and gunned it they are dogs. At least my na vert. The real power is from around 4-6 k rpms or so. Sometimes just have to downshiift to get into that power band. My 89na very is not very powerful but a joy to drive when driven properly. Just a thought. My wife thinks my rx is faster than our g35. Ill just let her keep thinking that.lol

If he was on the highway in secound and gunned it, that is the power. Hopefully it is the Aux sleeves. The VDI would do the same in not allowing you to achieve the overdrive.

I had an '89 FC a couple of years ago and it definitely wasn't fast. It was my first rotary and I was surprised how it kind of felt like it had the same power throughout the whole rpm range if that makes any sense. They say it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow

What do you normally drive? Unfortunately most of the cars produced today are faster and more powerful than a na rx7. In saying this, its more fun to drive than most cars. They need to be revved. The slowest one I ever drove was owned by someone who never revved the car past 3500rpm. Maybe just a coincidence.
