SC Tach just quit

Hi guys, I just noticed my tach quit. No movement from needle at all. I thought I read some where that it is wired from the trailing coil negative but the Haynes manual wire diagram shows it working off the leading coil. The car is an 81 GSL 12A but the previous only swapped in a newer model coil that looks like 2 coils in one with both spark plug wires running to the leading plugs and still has one old trailing coil hooked up. Car still runs well. I swapped the trailing coil out and nothing. Is there anything else between the negative lead of the coil and the tach itself? Could the newer model coil arrangement blow my stock tach? Thanks Rob

not many regulars frequent this section that can be of some help, at least the ones i know that have this simular setup. u have enough posts to get out of the new member section. sounds like the previous owner upgraded the ignition to the 2nd gen coil setup. i haven't done that upgrade yet but several that frequent the SE section of this site have. check us out in the SE section if u haven't already done so and post ur question there. if it's still running ok then it's obvious that the coil still works. all the one's i've had the tach was connected to the trailing coil, but will work regardless which coil it's connected to.

edit: sit tight, i have help on the way.

The tack lead is a yellow wire with a green stripe. Check to see if this is connected to the negative side of the leading or trailing coil.

If connected to the trailing coil then check for spark on the trailing plug wire. You may gave a blown trailing ignitor (black box located on the dizzy next to alternator)

You can have a blown trailing ignitor and not notice it with the car running.

SC Fixed

Thanks guys, trouble was a bad ignitor trailing side. Checked for spark. No spark. Had spare ignitor and swapped it out. Presto tach working again. Thanks. Merry CHRISTmas. Carey

TN sorry to break in but,

I am really wondering if the tach quits and the ignitor is bad does this mean no spark to two of the plugs? Will the engine run OK on just two plugs?I am kinda new to rotarys and just don't know. Also I saw ignitors advertised as fitting both Mazda's and Dodges, does anyone know how many different cars an ignitor for an 82 gsl might have been orig.equipment on.I have a frind with a junkyard and might go looking around for a couple of spares. Thanks for any help.MW
