Surging problem solved!!

Hi everyone.

I got a lot of help from this site in figuring out the answer to this problem, so I thought I'd share the answer. I hope it helps someone else.

So here's the background. I decided to do some maintenance on my 88 vert. Hoses, belts, fluids, etc. The hoses turned out to be the most time consuming, as you really have to take off the dynamic chamber to get at one of them. In the course of this, I broke the nipple off the switching solenoid valve and had an issue with being unable to find one of the vacuum hoses when putting things back together. To make a long story short, I found the missing hose and was able to at least temporarily fix the switching solenoid. Special thanks to need RX7 for getting me a replacement. My old one is ok at the moment, but I don't trust it.

Anyway, with that told, the car would run great when cold but surge and buck horribly when it got hot. My thought was another missing hose or a vacuum leak somewhere in the system. I must've traced every line I could see and checked for something missing 50 times over the course of all this. After reading a lot of posts here and doing everything but an exorcism, I decided to try setting the TPS. This didn't really seem likely as I hadn't messed with it at all other than to disconnect it from the wiring harness when I pulled off the dynamic chamber, but hell... it's easy. Satch was pretty adamant about plugging in the back of the harness connector rather than the connector on the TPS itself, so that's what I did. Son of a gun, 0 volts. Yet on the TPS connector side I was reading voltage. I pulled the 2 connectors apart and was surprised by all the corroded green crap on the terminals. Apparently the connection was ok before I pulled it apart, but the corrosion was so bad that a slightly different orientation (meaning the terminals weren't in EXACTLY the same place when reconnected) was enough to prevent any connection at all. There wasn't even continuity. I used some contact cleaner and a small file to clean them up, reconnected, set the TPS, and holy crap... it runs great!

Somewhere along the line I saw another member had this same issue a few years ago. I remember the thread arguing about how the TPS couldn't be the issue because it wouldn't go so radically out of adjustment from the work he'd done. As I remember, it was very similar to what I'd just done. Logically it shouldn't be the culprit, but the corrosion is what did it to me.

I hope this saves someone the grief I went through trying to figure this out.

Thanks misterstyx. Should I have posted this somewhere else? As a new member I'm kind of limited as to where I can post anything. And to be honest, I was so damned excited I had to put it somewhere.
