Good luck with that...

Weld a big bolt to it.

hard to tell now since u ground on it but looks like it was a square head plug(pipe plug) that u could loosen with an adjustable wrench. if it is in deed removeable(and not just something cast into the housing), it really shouldn't take much effort to loosen. a really good cleaning should reveal if it's just part of the casting.

its not part of the casting its the bolt that keeps the rack pushed in to the worm gear it has to come out. and I tryed grinding two flat sides on it and then puting it in a vice and turning it out but the metal is so soft it just twisted the bolt head. I like arons idea I think I will try welding a bolt to it.I will let you know how it goes.

Unhappy

Oh, I hate it when that happens. It really is the 2nd worst thing it can happen while working on a car...

My tip for you:
-clean that, very well
-put some penetrating oil, like in this area:

-wait for the penetrating oil to penetrate (of course), maybe 5 minutes...?

then, with a chisel and a hammer, hit on the area marked in red, in such a way that the bolt rotates like green arrow points.

get it?

Good luck with that!

In the FSM, the larger hex part around the plug is a lock nut for the plug. The disassembly sequence is the locknut first then the plug. I suggest you try removing the locknut and then the plug should be easy. Absolutely amazing what useful information is in the FSM.

Wow I didnt even notice that! well thats good because the bolt should come out with the lock nut and I can just get new bolts to put the rack back together.

Have you tried using an easy out set? I think you can rent them from auto zone. I know I'm pretty know, but I have over 5 years' experience as an aircraft mechanic and I think that would pull it out no problem.

Download the FSM!

It is not just a bolt. It is a plug with a spring seated inside. The spring preloads the rack support opposite the pinion. The assembly process includes specific instructions for torqueing the plug and locknut to set the preload. I never took one apart...just looked at the FSM for five minutes.

Do yourself a big favor before you trash your steering gear. Download the FSM. There are several sites. Rotaryheads.com and foxed.ca are mentioned in many threads on this forum.

I wonder how this one turned out. I prefer it when people close their threads with the end of the story.

The OP's last post is only yesterday, guys! Assuming he has a day job, he may not have even tried again yet. And, maybe he has seen my post from last night and is decided to download the FSM before he disassembles it.

the thing to take away from this is make sure you know what you are doing before you do it! I dont usually jump in to things like this unless I make sure I know exactly how its done. I will definatly look up the how to and the fsm before I reassembul!

Glad you were able to get it apart. Per the online parts fiche, OEM part numbers are FB05-32-131 for the lock nut and FB05-32-129 for the plug ('bolt'). Doesn't look like stuff you'll find at TSC.

Last edited by RobbyWally; Mar 13, 2012 at 10:58 PM. Reason: Part number mistake
