PA Daily Driver

I recently got a 93 twin turbo in a trade. I would like to be able to daily it but i hear a lot of people saying that it's not a good idea. All of the vacume lines have been replaced and the motor and trans have been replaced within 10k. Are there textbook steps to take to keep it reliable? Also has an apexi fc commander installed as well as water temp and boost gauges. Thanks for all help and advice in advance!

Why shouldn't be capable to be a daily?

Few things you should keep in mind, They use oil so look at the dipstick frequently, also keep an eye on the temperature gauge they hate overheating. The maintanance is higher on these cars then a "normal" car but when it is fine and you keep these things in mind it can be a daily.

Ow, almost forgot......It's NOT feul economic

There's a lot people who daily drive them just have to do the right mods. I'm still new to RX-7 world myself but you can find out a lot in this forum.

I use mine as a daily driver as well, I haven't had a problem with it. I have made it a habit to check the oil every time I fill up (since that is once a week) and I prefer to keep it above half full, personally. Check out the FD FAQ for reliability maintenance/mods.

It all depends on how far you are driving and weather the car is comfortable to you.

Me personally, I would DD if I had a 15 to 20 min commute to work in non stop and go traffic

However if I am in Stop and go Traffic and had 30 minutes, my clutch foot would get tired in a hurry...

Check the 3rd Gen. stickys for all the answers to your maintenance questions to maximize reliablity.

As for a DD, it's small and easily missed in traffic, mpg sucks and you MUST buy premium. It's cramped, rides rough and has very little cargo room. Max is two passengers. It was a finicky car when it was new, let alone 2 decades later. Insurance isn't cheap despite it's age and parts (new and used) are expensive and sometimes difficult to find. And finally you live in PA...winters with snow and slick streets. Traction stinks and anything over an inch accumulation and you'll be a snow plow. They also run rich when cold and though I store mine in the winter I understand they can flood easily in uber-cold weather. I KNOW my brand new FB did back in the day.
On top of that the car is new to you and by your own admission you're not sure how to maintain it.

I love my FD. But if you ABSOLUTELY need your's to get to and from work or school... get a beater. If you can only afford one car, sell it and get something you can live with.

I daily mine rain snow or sun. Don't know how the winters are in PA but here in northern Japan it gets down to the teens at night at peak and we get 3 blizzards during winter that drop 5, 10+, 10+ respectively every year. They do a great job plowing on base where I do most of my driving, but crappy off base. But I have no traction issues with a full set of winters at all 4 corners. The only time I've gotten stuck is when I do something stupid like take it partially down the hill parking area at the "ski lodge" on base. The fd is a temperamental girl but if you take care of her she'll take care of you.

Like Flat_Boostin said, if you take care of it, it will take care of you. I daily mine, and have done the majority of reliability mods. If you just bought it, do the full tune up, flush n fill, oil, the whole nine yards. Then take it on a day long trip to see how it behaves. I bought mine, rebuilt it, broke it in, then took it on an 1100 mile trip across the desert and everything smoothed out. Now she's happy, and i have a sexy little dd for around town.

Using it as a daily driver isn't a huge deal as long as you practice routine maintenance and don't mod the crap out of it, run too much boost and/or redline it everywhere you go.

I am planning on picking up a RX7 for the summer to drive daily. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you take care of it.

To the OP......
I really don't care one way or another I guess. But before you make decisions based on what you've read in this thread consider (a) Whether the poster even owns an RX7 yet. (b) If they do own one, how long...months, days? (c) If it's even a 3rd Gen. RX7 like you have ...big differences if not . And (d), how many miles and in what conditions an owner might have to drive, and if there are alternatives if he doesn't have another car.

It's just that these thread questions about "how are these cars for a Daily Driver?" come up pretty often. And invariably it seems, a bunch of posters start spouting off about something they have no experience with. Please know that when reality hits these guys like a Whitney Houston cocktail they're not gonna post up that they had to sell the FD or that it's been sitting on jack-stands for the last six months....and they're now rockin' a Cavalier to and from work and school.
Ask yourself where the posts are from that midwestern or northeastern rust-belt owner with a limited budget who's owned and daily driven his RX7 for years?
There might be a few...but they're a very small lonely group.
