Sticky Fuel Gauge

1994 FD Touring 30500 original miles.

Hello All,

Lost my tach, speedo and odometer. I pulled the cluster and replaced a leaky capacitor on the board. All working now.

Question is: The fuel gauge needle does not read zero when the car is off, or for that matter, when the cluster is pulled and completely disconnected from the wiring harness. While the cluster was on the bench with the lens off, I moved the needle back and forth with my finger, and it seemed to be a little stiff. When the car is started, the needle returns to the same spot from where I moved it with my finger, but stays on the spot when the car is shut down, and even when the battery is disconnected, AND also when the cluster is disconnected from the harness.

What confused me is that I saw a new in box fuel gauge on Ebay, and in the Ebay photo, the needle was at 1/2 a tank!

Should the needle go to empty (zero) when the gauge is not powered, or does it normally stay on the last fuel supply reading? I just can't remember what the fuel gauge does when the car is off. As you can tell from the car's mileage, I don't drive it very much.

Thanks for any advise.

should always show last read level, even if no power to the gauge.

Yup, of course. Was so excited about the cluster being back in business that I did not think it through. Thanks for your help.
