Steering options for 85 gslse?
Has any one done a rack and pinion convertion to there 1st gen. Rx7 and how did they like the results? I was able to adjust the play out of my old steering box. (It was also out of fluid.) It is alot better than before but the low speed stering effort is quite irratating at times. (No I didnt over tighten the steering box.)
My other choice besides the rack&pinion option is to go with power steering that was available for this inpaticular car.
My car is a street car and will never be ran on a track so it would be nice to drive around a parking lot with one hand once in a while.

ReSpeed makes a kit, but I have no direct experience with it.
The 2nd gen subframe can also be swapped in with a little bit of work, so you get full FC suspension up front (including the steering rack).

Yep. Everybody seems to be very happy with the rack from Respeed ( www.re-speed.com )
I'd have one myself if I didn't have race class restrictions to deal with.

Thanks all for your advice.
patmac6075 What steering ratio did you use 20:1 or 15:1? Are you happy with your ratio?
1G is allot but it sounds like a upgrade that solves both steering and alignment problems that 1st gen Rx7s came with from the factroy.

From what I understand from reading Billy's posts (owner of Respeed), the steering effort is reduced, even with the quick ratio. He pretty much recommends the quick ratio for everyone other than little old ladies.
If you want, you can PM him with your questions. His username is Bwaits_
He helped me set my car up for autocross a few years ago. He knows his stuff, and his products are top notch, and his customer service should be a shining example for everyone else to strive for. You will not be disappointed if you have any dealings with him...

I have the Re-Speed rack and I have had both the standard ratio (20-1) and the quick ratio (15-1) rack and there is a difference in the steering effort. I found the 20-1 to be best for me. Part of the reason is that it is not as sensitive at very high speed. (120 +). The high effort with the quick ratio is not noticible at driving speeds, only in the parking lot, and may have been worse in my case because my steering wheel is slightly smaller than stock, it would have been even less with the stock wheel. I think it comes down to personal preference.
PS... I highly recommend Billy's kit, My car drives sooooooo much better, it is like a whole new car!!!!!!!!!!
