PA Starts then shuts off?

My 86 GXL has the same problem at least once a day. My friend who knows alittle more about rotaries told me it could be because I have low compression and need a rebuild or a new engine. The problem is my FC won't start sometimes so I have to pull the EGI fuses and crank it a few times and put them back in and it will start and if not then i repeat the process until it starts. then the car won't hold an idle, it just dies unless i give it some gas and then after a minute or two it will hold an idle around 1,400 rpms. Other times when I start it the car will run fine but still idle high. I also have the 4,000 rpm hesitation and I added fuel system cleaner and got my tps adjusted and it still is doing it. Can anyone help me or have any advice on my problems? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well, it sounds like the car is just in poor tune. So that could be a significant contributing factor and low compression may not even be in the picture.

Give the car a full and proper tuneup. Then check all sensors according to the FSM. Have the injectors professionally serviced (fuel system cleaner is a waste of money). Fix any vacuum leaks.

I've read on this forum of people sending their injectors to Witch hunter. I guess they charge only $15 for each injector. Do you recommend this shop or any others for professional injector cleaning and blueprinting? I'll have to talk to Dave at KDR performace about a tune-up. I've been wanting to replace all vacuum hoses and pulley belts since I bought the car almost a year ago so I should probably get on that very soon. The engine does have 122k so I just figured my friend was right about the low compression. That would be really great if I didn't need a rebuild or new engine though. Thanks for the help. If anyone else thinks of something too, please let me know. Thanks!

Have Dave check the compression. He has a good tool.

I always take my injectors to my local injection shop so I don't have any direct experience with Witch Hunter. But I've been a user of their great website for a while so I would feel comfortable recommending them.

Yeah a compression test would be nice. I guess that could determine too if I really do need a rebuild or new engine. I'm going to have to look into getting a compression test because I know my car has overheated a few times before. I'm sure the seals are shot. Right now I'm running the coolant with blue devil block sealer. That's what stopped it from overheating. I'm also going to have to get some money together to get my injectors cleaned if it turns out I still have good compression on my engine.

Today I went out and had to pull the fuses to get the car to start but when it did the car ran great. I went on some back roads and really opened it up and suprisingly the 4,000 rpm hesitation didn't happen. Maybe it only does hesitates when I'm low on oil? Because I just put a full quart of 10w40 in yesterday. I made sure to bring it well past 4 grand a few times and there was still no hesitation. Hopefully it holds up and actually stopped but who knows. I'll see in the next couple days. Overall I'm pretty happy with the way it ran today, so far.

It still seems to hesitate but only when I press on the gas a little harder.

Witch hunter is good. I've used them and they are very professional. I wanna say it was about $95 for a complete service for all 4 of my S5 NA injectors. They flow tested them right as they came to them, graphed it on how they flowed. Cleaned and rebuilt them, flow tested and graphed them after that. Boxed them up very nicely and sent them back all in one week. It was amazing how shot they were. One tip was completely cracked and leaked 100% of the time from what they showed me.

After I re installed them, the car felt great and didn't flood out as much. Tho, it was low on compression and was kinda tired. haha. But yeah, sounds like you need a basic tune up. I would replace the spark plugs and wires along w/ checking for vac leaks. Air filter and other misc stuff for a tune up.

Yeah I was checking out they're website and they seem like a pretty good deal. I'm definitely going to have to use them once I get the money together. I'm happy to hear some feedback on Witchhunter before I send my injectors out to them. Thanks! I'm pretty sure my engine has low compression and is very tired at 122,500 miles. I need a compression test to be sure though. As for replacing the spark plugs I do that very often and I just did maybe a month ago if that. I was thinking about getting new wires and I've been wanting to look for vacuum leaks and replace all the hoses too. I guess I just need to get off my lazy *** and do it. I've also upgraded to a new air intake. I got rid of the restrictive stock air filter box and have an aftermarket one on. I'm not sure of the name but it works really well. I can hear the intake sucking in when I rev it or just driving around. It's a nice throaty sorta sound, I love it. Again thanks for the help.

Sounds like the hesitation may be due to a grounding issue.

Can't it be the adjustment of the throttle cable also? I'm going to take a look at that link you sent me. Thanks.
