Starting problems
1988 rx7 manual engine. When i try and start it, it just makes a wheezing sound. It doesnt try and turn over or click, just WEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound. What part do I need to replace? Where is a good place to buy parts for rx7.

Start with the simple things. Remove, clean, and reinstall the connections at both ends of both battery cables. If the starter isn't getting enough juice when you try to start it, it can end up spinning without engaging.
If that doesn't take care of it, then move on to testing of the starter. Good luck.

So ive had an 87 rx7 Turbo, the motor was rebuilt in 2000 and there has been a new turbo put on the car. It was parked about a year ago, and now it wont start. I turn the key over and nothing happens at all. I dont get any gauge movement or my dash lights do not light up(up by the windshield). Im not sure where to start, I am new to the mazda rx7 as of today. Checked all my fuses and they seem to be fine. I kept blowing the 7.5 Room fuse but now seems to be fine. When I turn the key over, I do not here my fuel pump kick on at all. Just not sure where to start at all PLEASE HELP! Also if someone could take pics of the fuse box under the hood cuz I found some wires that were cut, and also the coil pack near the headlight as there is a plug that is plugged in with a black wire that has nowhere to go thanx.
Here is a list of things that work and that dont work.
Working:
-Interior Lights
-Dash Lights
-Headlights
-4 Ways
-Security light flashes
Not Working:
-Wipers
-Signal
-Gauges
-Windows
-Mirrors

The first two issues sound like the circuit opening relay. its a small black relay box about 1.5 in square located by the ecu. has about 5 wires coming out. the sauter (sp) joints inside get corroded from moisture and it ends up opening the circuit to run the injectors (wheezing sound) but not the circuit to the starter. you can try to clean them i have but only lasted so long or you can bang it around and might work sometimes. think the 1st gen fi and 2nd gen ones are the same.
the last one has to be some in cabin wiring not under the hood. since there's so many things it all must be related. try to find any ground wires that look crappy. otherwise i would buy a haynes manual and follow the wiring around. you'll prob need the manual eventually anyways.
hope this helps

I greatly appreciate your response. I will get to this tomorrow sometime as I am currently working right now. I will let you know how things go, and I was given the manual already by the person I had recieved the car from. I will look into all of this and let you know what happens, Thanks again!

Engine fuse box should have;
White/Red, White/Green, Red, Black/Green, White/Blue and two Black wires. If your car has ABS brakes then you would also have a Black/Blue wire.

I have White/Green, White/Red, Black, Red/Blue, Dark blue/Green, White/Blue. In the Coil pack near drivers side headlight there is a plug that goes into it but there is a single black wire not plugging into anything. I looked around for something to connect it to but couldnt seen anything. If someone could post pictures of this area that would be great then I coulld just compare them....

My brother has been sorting through all the wires under the dash and found a wire that was cut and re-attached to another wire near the ignition....he said he seen which wire it was connected to so switched it up but nothing happened. I will be able to post some pics tomorrow around thiss time or a little later. Also, on the engine fuse box it looks like in the bolt attached to the wheel well, there used to be a wire or 2 connected to it....not sure if that was a ground or what happened?

Also, is the Black wire near the coil thicker in gauge then the wires connected to the coil in the White plug?

I dont think any of those are cut,it was attached to the bolt but i didnt see any wires goin into the fuse box that were cut, im not at home right now but can let you know as soon as I go home. It looked just about as think maybe a little thinker.

Also, the wires to your fuse box don't completely jive w/ the service manual but if none are cut then hopefully that isn't a problem. When you get home recheck the coolr of the wires you said were connected to the fuse box and if they exactly match up w/the ones you stated you have.

Ok, well im wondering if it has something to do with my ignition because when I turn the key on no of my warning lights come on and my gauges dont even move, ive been thinking about by passing the ignition to see if thats the problem. Cuz I can turn the key forward to on and pull the key out still, and that definitely should happen at all.

On the end of the engine fuse box, the bolt that attached the fuse box to the wheel well, there is a black/red wire that was cut, would that be a ground that should be connecting to the black wire that is just sitiing with the white plug that goes into the coil?

Hey, So Ive Checked all my wires and they seem to match up. So the wire I was thinking was a ground on the main fuse box seems to be the red black wire in your last description as the wire sending power to start up the main circuit? I ahve pictures but not sure how to post them on here?!?! I made an album under my profile feel free to look at the pictures and help me as much as possible thanx. The black box I was told to find by the ECU was actually located under the dash on drivers side. It has had some wires cut and redirected. I am ripping out the dash right now and will have more pics posted in about an hour or so.

In the thumbnail below there are two green arrows. These green plugs are for diagnostic purposes and they are not supposed to be connected to anything. Smaller plug is the initial set coupler and is used for setting idle. The other green plug, larger one, is used for pulling trouble codes w/LED bulbs. The White plug connects to the top of the coil(leading). The black arrow points to a Black wire and not sure if this is the Black wire you speak of that is not connected to anything.
These are the proper colored wires. I see one Black wire but there needs to be one of similar gauge on the other side of the fuse box. Is it their or not?

In looking at the pics a bit more, the white plug is fine and the B/Y wire should have battery voltage on it when the key is to on and the battery is hooked up of course, and the Green wire next to it is hooked up to the ECU and is used for firing the leading coil. If the black arrow does point to the wire you speak of then that particular wire is used for measuring the RPM level of the leading coil and this wire should not be connected to anything.

The wire between W/R and Red, it has yellow there that is the second black wire, its hard to see and its connected to the battery and the fuse box. Yes the black arrow going to the black plug, that is the wire that I was saying goes to nothing at all.
When I was told to look for that small black box by the ECU the other day for corrosion, I went in the manual to find where it was and it is located on the drivers side. There was a black/white wire previously cut from it and rewired to something else. I almost have the dassh off, even tho I said it would be done earlier ended up getting a fire call since im a firefighter lol, so ill have better pics up of whats going on in about 30 mins or less.

I see the thick black wire on the side of the fuse box that travels right under the Red wire but are you saying there is another black wire connected to the other side of the fuse box?
Also, do you know what this black box that you speak of is and why did someone tell you to look for it. How many wires can go to this plug which has a B/W wire cut from it and if there are any other wires going to this plug then what colors are they? Lastly, your engine pics are clear and well lit but you need some additional lighting to get a good pic of your interior shots and good focus as well.

So I have posted some pics in my profile for you to look at. smwebb advised me to find this little black box thingy. I have now found it and there was a wire cut off of it.

The pic below shows where one of the ignition wires is spliced into. This B/R wire would have voltage on it w/key to on. I think you're saying that this wire was also connected to the black box you speak of. Is this correct? The black box is the Circuit Opening Relay which is what runs the fuel pump. If this Red wire was connected to the Circuit Opening Relay then what was the color of the wire it was connected to for it is hard to see?
This is a better pic of the "black box."
