AL the sound of detonation

i was just curious if someone could comment on how detonation sounds in a rotary. i'm all too familiar with this sound on piston engines but i was curious if you could expect a similar or different sound when this condition occurs in a wankel. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

Depends on the motor, but it is generally a popcorn popping type sound coming from the passengers side of the engine bay.

to me it's always sounded like taking (2) 2x4's and smacking them together really hard and really fast.

OK, so it is quite a bit different than the metallic crickets chirping kind of sound you hear in a typical piston engine that has the timing over advanced. i was experiencing a popping sound when i would get on it (WOT) over 4000-5000 RPM, also was like it was missing really jerky power going on. any more info would be great. thanks.

Oh yes, considerably louder than a piston engine.

Why would a rotary do that at only 3000 to 5000 rpm? Does it have larger injectors?

On a 12a it kinda sounds like marbles rattling around in a tin coffee can...

From my own personal experience it sounds similar to a piston engine but much louder...
