Brown plug/sticker solenoid (6PI) on the emissions rack. It is with all of the other solenoids on the driver-side of the engine. Go to the FSM fuel and emissions section for a vacuum diagram.

This site has the FSM for 1988 and 1989. I'd recommend you download and save all the pdfs.

There are links in the 2nd gen FAQ as well. I use the foxed.ca site or this one: http://www.rotaryheads.com/PDF/2nd_gen/

You can just get some used ones via the classifieds. Did you break one? There are only 2 kinds of solenoids on the various 2nd gen emissions racks. An EGR or VDI solenoid would be identical to a 6PI for instance.

no i didn't break any of them, just thought it wouldn't hurt to replace them if i could and they weren't ridiculously expensive. ill just run through the test my haynes book describes of removing the solenoid, connecting it to battery power to open up the inside and blow through the specified hole and look for air to come out the other to determine if they are still good

You can test them if you want, but I've never heard of one failing. They're simple devices.
