SA - Fast RPM/Acceleration at start up
So, I haven't been on in a while, and in the meantime picked up my 2nd SA "White" I bought it, primarily for the running 12A engine, for my 1st SA "Blue" Both are 1980's
I recently got "Blue" running. I traced the problem to the distributor, replaced it, now it starts fine.
My only problem is when it starts the engine accelerates like it's floored, so I quickly turn it off. It's a fast gradual climb in RPM's, as if I'm hitting the gas. I've checked all accelerator linkage/lines and I can't find anything stuck. The pedal travels and returns as it should.
Any Ideas what would cause this???
Thank you,
beej

Could be sticking floats in the carb, not allowing the fuel flow to shut off as it flows into the bowls.
I also agree, have you visually inspected the throttle plates to ensure they are moving freely?
And, is there slack in the throttle cable (should be)?

Sticky throttle plate
UPDATE:
I took off the air cleaner to get a better look at the carb and the throttle cable. The cable was fine, so I proceeded to the throttle plate inside the carb.
It turns out, it was sticking, and allowing fuel/air to dump in carb when started. I wiped it clean, and sprayed very little WD40 on the mechanics of it.
Now it’s functioning as it should, and I'm really getting to hear this engine for the 1st time since I've owned it.
I'm noticing the the engine is very shaky, like the timing is off.
I also have a loud whiney humming coming from the engine. It's not constant, but frequent, and seems to be affecting idle too. I've checked the tension of the serp-belts.
I read another post on a Idler Pulley noise similar to mine. So I will begin checking the belt/pulley system further.
