S5 FC Rx-7 Emissions delete, need help!

Hey you guys this is my first post on the forum, it’s been helping me out loads for the last 2 years i’ve owned my 1991 seven. I’ve been in the middle of an emissions delete, it being an s5 I struggled to find much info on specifically s5 emissions delete. I’m not the most mechanically inclined… and i’ve learnt a lot thanks to you guys but now i’m a bit stuck on what the next few steps are, so any info or advice is super helpful! Thanks in advance, apologies if this isn’t the right place!

welcome to the board, Colin.

i'll provide you with a link that should hopefully get you started on learning what you need to know. hopefully, someone more capable than myself will join in at a later point and provide whatever information the threads in the link fail to provide.

By emissions delete, I assume you mean getting rid of the air pump and all the other little devices of the intake system. It is possible, but not without a ton of work for no real benefit. Unless you plan to do a bunch of custom work (ecu, electrical, fabrication), an emissions delete is not recommended for the s5 NA cars. It is easier on the S4 cars, but the S5 ECU is more dependent on the sub-systems to function. I did a lot of research on and emissions delete when I port-matched my manifolds and cleaned everything up. Here is what I found and why I didn't end up deleting a majority of mine.

Reasons for not deleting emissions system components
1. The 5th and 6th ports, and the VDI on the s5 cars function off of vacuum and pressure created by the air-pump/smog-pump. It is possible to rig a small 12v air pump to make them work, but it is a lot of work for not much benefit.
2. The Stock ECU will tend to freak out a bit without proper inputs from various parts of the rats nest. Unless you plan to go standalone, your car will not run cleanly and smoothly.
3. Your MPG will suffer massively. Not that these cars get the best gas mileage, but you can easily go into the single digits without seeing any performance gain. Your car will run much richer without changing the ECU at the same time. If you still have catalytic converters, then will burn up and clog in a matter of weeks if you are running that rich.
4. Aside from aesthetics of cleaning up the engine bay, there is no real benefit.
5. Having the air pump on the passenger side of the front of the engine keeps the eccentric shaft from prematurely wearing on the front bearing. Without it, all the tension from the ac compressor and the power steering pump will cause uneven wear on the front iron bearing.

Even though there is not much you can get rid of, you can do a few things to help out and clean up your engine bay.
1. Throttle body: remove the secondary butterfly valve and fill the holes in the side with JB weld. Search throttle body mods on fc3s pro and it should come up.
2. Clean everything. It might sound simple, but get a can of carburetor cleaner and a wire brush and go to town getting rid of all the grease and oil stuck in various parts of the engine
3. Clean out the intakes, especially the VDI valve and chamber. the PCV valve shoots excess oil in the intake and it can build up and make the VDI system stick open or closed.
4. Have your injectors cleaned and flow tested.
5. Replace all your vacuum lines with high quality silicone lines and put small zip ties on each end to prevent them from popping off.
6. Block off/ remove the coolant lines going to the throttle body. It is a no longer needed emissions part.
7. Clean the air pump by spinning it by hand and spraying tome carb cleaner in. If you are feeling adventurous, open it up and clean all the surfaces and re lube the bearings on each end of the pump.
8. Check the idler bearings for the v belts. Bad bearings can rob power and you in a perfect spot to replace them.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, but i wish you all the best in getting the most out of these S5 na cars. Good luck!
