rx7 starter position bellhousing

Hello, I'm new here and to rotors. I'm a long time mini/garden tractor puller and I'm seriously considering building a single rotor 13B peripheral ported high compression na 89-91 engine using some parts from Atkins and Racing Beat and others to run in a Super Stock 1100 lb. class. about the only issue I might have mounting it in a Cub Cadet frame is the starter position of 7-8 o'clock as that is where my steering gearbox is, no Mazda trans... I think I read somewhere that there may be a 12 o'clock position which would be great for me. If so what models/years did they use these bellhousings for stick shifts, pictues or where to find one. Thanks for any help.

Very old rotarys had the starter mounted at the top. Off hand, and this is pretty obscure, I think only the 10A and the absolute first 12As. And if I remember correctly (I may not), the bellhousings won't bolt up to the rear iron of a more modern engine.

If you can cut and weld, I don't see why you couldn't cut the starter area out of the bellhousing and then weld it back up at the top.

Thanks Aaron for your reply. Well, I guess that's not good news for an easy fix. after looking at bellhousing photos I'm not so sure how easy it'd be to do especially with aluminum as I usually work with steel. also the starter mounting flange has mounting bolt holes to the block/rear cover as part of that flange. I looked for a steel scatter can for an rx7 but I see they're very pricey, so that's out.. I'll have to think on this some more. Thanks again.

Another option would be to must make a plate to mount on the rear iron, and then fab your starter mounting bosses off that plate. Could be done in steel.
