I'm Dave and have just recently got back into my mothers RX7 which i used to get around in during the mid 80's.
She couldn't bear to sell it after upgrading to a different car in the early 90's, so the car was placed in a dodgy little shed at my fathers workplace for basically 20+ years.
The heat in that garage over the years has unfortunately warped several of the interior parts, and a bit of moisture has got into it somewhere so it smells 'a bit funky' - i am slowly getting rid of the smells, thank god! and overall it is in pretty decent condition.
A couple of questions i am hoping someone can answer -
1. RPM 'red line alter', i thought the audio alarm would start to sound around 5,000rpm and the time between beeps would progressively increase along with the sound the closer you got to red lining it (maybe its just the faded memory of a 16 year old).
Nowadays, it only begins to beep at around 6,000-6,500rpm and the sound is pretty faint and constant. - its sounds like someone is 're choking an already choked chicken' (ie not that impressive). Is this how it is, or are there some issues with the alarm?
2. The vent directional controls are not working - air comes out near the drivers footwell only (but surprisingly the air conditioner is cold). Any tips on how to fix this?
far out mate. That looks beautiful. What a blessing that it was kept all these years.
In terms of your questions:
(1): the shift buzzer is a constant tone beep - it just cuts in and stays on until the revs drop below the cut-in point again. The factory cut-in point is 6500rpm. However, this can be adjusted with a simple modification, which I describe in a tutorial I wrote almost 20 years ago! See here: HOW TO: change rpm setting of 1st gen redline buzzer - AusRotary
(2) You're going to need to dig into mechanism behind the centre console switch to see whether the selector is physically moving the panels for the blower ducting.
This forum is a goldmine with some great members, but has a bit of a North American focus. You will find lots of information specific to Australian delivered models on AusRotary.com
Welcome to the forum! Did your mother buy the car new? How many miles are on your GSL-SE? Would definitely love to see more pictures of the car!
KYPREO pretty much hit the nail on the head with his response to your technical questions. To get more in depth with the technical part, you'll want to create a thread in the 1st gen tech section with your technical questions. We have a lot of knowledgeable people that will definitely be more than willing to lend a hand helping you get the car where you want it to be.
Yes, its like my own little time capsule, after removing what seemed liked a half an inch of dust.
Thanks for your quick reply and kind assistance with my questions - so therefore the rpm alert must be working as per spec (my memories of its operation seemed much more thrilling).
With regards to the vents, the lever mechanism is working and i took it out for a drive to just clarify what was occurring - there seems to be a constant stream of warm arm coming from the base of the steering column (right between the clutch and brake pedals).
Interestingly, when the air conditioner is on, cold air comes through the centre vents, but not without the a/c button depressed.
Thanks for your tip on the Aussie website - i will check it out!
Thanks for your message and tip for technical support.
The car was around 3 months old when she bought it, and has 195,000 kilometres on the clock - quite a bit given these were basically done in the first 10 years (although i used to drive it just about every night and weekend - what else is a 16 year old to do in 1984 with no facebook or mobile phones).
