RX7 Reliabiliy Question

The RX7 is my favorite sport car of all time. My dream is to own any 3rd gen model, but I've read a few posts from people stating that reliability of the 3rd gen is not that great and that reliability of the 2nd gen is quite good. I actually own a 2nd gen, but was looking into buying a 3rd gen. I'm not looking to buy a 3rd gen at this point in time if it's not reliable. I will just stick with my 2nd gen RX7. I would appreciate any help.

The R in Rx7 is for reliability.

J/k, But from what i gathered from FD people, 13brew are finicky

Read the first paragraph to help you decide it a 3rd gen is right for you.

For its time, the 3rd gen beat out (performance wise) many cars that cost 2 and 3 times as much. To keep the cost low, meant they had to cut corners. You can build a releiable 3rd gen with a few mods, but its not going to go 200,000 miles like and NA 2nd gen. In fact, most turbo rotaries won't last that long, even the 2nd gen TII.

I would imagine that its like any other car, some cars are really bad some are really good. my 3000gt i never had a problem not once. my oh so reliable wrx, had the tranny grenade after 3k miles. But as always there reliability, cheap, and fast you can only have 2 of the 3. rx7 are cheap and fast... but as with my 3000gt i put a few *expensive* mods into and it was reliable and fast.

Reliability is a relative term. If compared to Ferrari's, 3rd gens are not unreliable. If compared to Honda Civic's, they're terribly unreliable. If compared to NA 2nd gens they're still kinda unreliable.

FDs are what you make of them. If you put plenty of time and money into maintenance there will be very few surprises. That's my definition of reliable, and so my 3rd gen has been reliable to me.

Others consider reliability to be about how little money it takes to keep it running. Then they put very little money into the car, waiting till things break and they label the car crappy and unreliable.

So all that said, I'd say FDs are moderately reliable and high cost of maintenance.

if you do the correct mods and looks after it, it will treat you well. it's a reciprocal relationship, you treat it well and it will treat you back. do the necessary reliability mods, AST etc. keep it maintained: engine oil topped up, etc. and it will be fine.
every car may have problems and rx7 MIGHT have more, but its nothing a loving owner can't fix.
