RX7 newbie! Wheels and suspension
Hey guys,
I've had my efini RX7 1994 R2 for about 9 months now and have since had a rebuild and some other bits that have been sorted luckyly under 3rd party warranty. I have recently bought a set of Buddy club wheels with a more agressive offset (+30) and been wondering if it has been a mistake. The wheels are P1 SF 18 inch (8.5 rim with 225/40/18 on front and 9 rim with 255/35/18 on back) in gun metal and they look superb, and almost flush.
I know that offsets shouldn't really exceed +37 ish (although depens on car) but tried the wheels at dealer before driving away and they only come +50 or +30 in the P1 design. All ok apart from a minor lip rub on rear offside which doesn't happen on near side. This anoyed me a bit so spoke to guy at dealer and he said the lip just needed persuading outwards slightly to match the nearside. Ok, not too chuffed about this but it can be sorted.
The other thing that is more worrying is that the fronts are clear of the lip but the car rubs on large bumps. If I can remember, the stock wheels might have also rubbed over large spead bumps due to nature of car but not as much. The rubbing is noticable and is under the arch on the plastic lining. Am I right in thinking that the agreesive offset, even if clear of the lip has a large pendulem effect from the suspension fulcrum point thus travelling further? Probably need a diagram to see the movement.
I was thinking of getting the suspension looked at as the stock stuff is probably worn. What do you recon? Get rid of the new expensive wheels or sort suspension?... The car is in brilliant condition and I want to keep it that way.
Cheers

30 offset will rub plain and simple.
+50 is the stock offset. +45 will work with 255/40/17s on 9" wide wheels up front. +40 will usually rub a bit under hard use. Anything beyond +45 on a 9" wheels, you should plan on figuring out what to do to make it work or get wheels that will work.
There is a sticky in the Suspension section with a spreadsheet on wheel fitment for the FD.

Cheers Pal,
You've kind of confirmed what I thought, been sold the wrong wheels. Think I'm gonna have to bite-the-bullet on this one and sell those wheels to a Skyline owner or something. They do look real nice on the car but they are heavy! I thought Buddy Club wheels were supposed to light, guess this is only the QF range.
I've seen some other wheels that interest me. What do you think about Enkei PF01 wheels? They apear to be quite economic considering the weight and design of the wheel. There are limited offset available so would probably go for the +45? I am presuming a +45 offset will work quite safely but will the tyres look ok? I still want a reasonably flush look, but behind the fender lips. Was thinking about 18x8.5 for front and 9 for rears, or possibly even 9's all round if this will fit.
I've read about some people recommending a square set up of 245mm wide tyres all round?
Other wheels I have seen are the OZ Ultraleggera in black or matt gunmetal. These are more readily available in UK.
For the short term, I was considering either changing the back tyres to 225 wide to bring the tyre edge 15mm inwards and drive real careful as a temp fix. Otherwise, chuck the stock wheels back on and get some new tyres as they are perishing / cracking.
What do you have on your car?
