I think literally any 90's JDM sports car is a good investment. The market has gone mad, I bought an R34 GTR almost 2 years ago and its been valued almost double what I have paid

Same man, I think I’m gonna try to get one next year if I can build a garage before winter

If we're NOT all talking about a financial perspective, then I'll point you to the adage that we all tend to "love what we suffer for". After performance and looks, a significant reason the FD inspires loyalty in it's owners.

^ Just a repeat of what everybody else has said, but no car is a good financial investment IMHO. Maintenance, repairs, etc all cut into the profits. It's definitely an investment to buy now if it's your dream car though!

A buddy of mine made around 30k by flipping his Mk4 Supra at the height of the FF Paul Walker Supra craze. I think a lot of people want to get it in on that, and in a way, it did happen for the FD. But even then, if it really would have happened for the FD, I think it would have happened a long time ago, like when Initial D was still widely popular stateside.
I personally think Alex Flores(yolodbagtuning on youtube) put it best: not driving your car and letting it sit in a garage is kinda like refusing to sleep with your girlfriend... to preserve her value for the next guy.

They're a good investment over here in the UK at the moment as prices are going up for any Japanese 90's cars, once they hit 25 years old and you guys can import them they skyrocket in value. eg. Skyline r32 GTR was available over here for £10kish a couple of years ago, now you're looking at £25k. May be a redundant post for your query as your in the states...

TIL. I was wondering why the yellow ones always seemed more expensive in my search. Luckily I'm partial to Vintage Red (OK white is pretty great too)

Yes and no. The price of stock, low mileage, unmodified FDs has risen to the 30-40k range from 20k. Due mostly to collector interest. Highly modified FDs are still reasonably priced though and will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future.

I personally think that they are a good investment if they are cared for and looked after. They are the last of the great rotaries. Just look at whats happened to the value of the RX2's and RX3's over the past 10 years...

If you are set on importing I recommend you import directly through a Japanese dealer. I purchased my rx7 directly from Japan opposed to going through a stateside importer. The same rx7 I bought was more than double of what I actually got it for...with shipping. Stateside will mark it up.

I am considering my personalized license plate to be MONYPIT if that is any indication. However it makes me the happiest person in the world and that is how I determine value. Not $$$$$$.

Just finished reading this thread... interesting views and thoughts about the FD. I'm currently selling my Evo 8 because it sits in my garage and doesn't move. I want to buy a car I'll look forward to driving again.

My honest opinion is that the import rx7 will depreciate in value vs a lhd rx7. Simply, because the market will be flooded with rhd rx. It is very difficult to find a nice and clean rx7 at a fair price.

It depends how you look at it. If you want to drive it and are pationnate about cars, it may not be a good investment money-wise, but it will be worth it. On the other hand, if you buy a very nice looking one and dont drive it, value will go up.
In my opinion though rx7's should be driven.
