Rough start, harder to start when hot
I have a 91 NA vert.
This is when I start it cold:

Usually it'll start alright, but sometimes I have to pump the gas a little.

As you can see, it's tougher to do. If I don't pump the gas at all it won't start. It seems like it cooperates best when I pump the gas at a similar frequency to the frequency it turns over at.
I learned the hard way about flooding the engine a while ago, and it seems like it's having to burn off a bunch of excess fuel similarly (but not to the same extent) to when it was flooded.
This kind of thing was happening a while ago while my water pump was failing, got that replaced about a month ago and then it was fine for a while but now it's been happening again. It's been getting steadily worse over the past week or so, which coincides with the weather getting really hot. (Set the record for the whole month of june the other day)
The other day it just wouldn't start at all no matter how much I tried. This was after driving a ways so it was hot, and almost didn't start cold. I tried the deflooding procedure several times but it didn't seem to help. My conjecture was that it wasn't getting enough fuel. I left it there overnight and the next morning when I got it started it blasted thick white smoke everywhere for a few minutes. Guess I didn't deflood it well enough?
Also, the coolant alarm likes to go off a lot, usually for a while after starting it up, even though the coolant is definitely full and I've let it run with the radiator cap off for quite a while to try to get any air out.

So it was hot as hell yesterday and it actually started up with almost no hesitation at all, so it doesn't seem to be related to the heat.
The other day I couldn't get it to start it up again after driving by cranking it, but I did manage to do a rolling start.
What could be causing this? Fuel pump going bad? Injectors?
