rotary weirdness

Having a problem with my s4 na vert. I believe its an 88. I put a motor in it and got it started and ran for maybe a minute or 2 and realized the front cover was leaking. I replaced the front cover a week ago and it seemed fine but I had forgoten to set the timing and used a different cas. I couldnt get it started right and went back to the original cas which had been stuck in the bad cover. I tried setting the timing per the fsm and it would start but wouldnt idle. It would go to 1000 rpm and die, I could keep it going with the pedal. I did some more research on timing and am now setting the cas to the correct position after stabbing it. Now it starts and goes up to 4000 rpm right away, goes down to 1000, fluctuating between 1000-1500 and when i hit the gas it may go up to 2000 but nothing really happens. I also checked the tps and set it per the fsm to 1000 ohms. i made a diagnostic checker today and am going to try it to see if it says anything helpful. Any insight?

Wouldn't it be prudent to share w/the forum members what exactly was the fix?
