Resonator or muffler on a straight pipe
I just finished straight piping my ‘90 GXL and this thing is too damn loud. 2.5” piping from the header back and i mean this thing is seriously one of the loudest cars ive ever heard. as im gonna be daily driving it i need to quiet it down a lot but i still want it to sound good and i want to restrict the exhaust as little as possible. would you guys suggest a resonator or muffler and why? also any specific brands? keep in mind that im in high school and im broke af:/
*exhaust isn’t hung up yet in the video, i still have to bend a couple pipes so the video is only a sound refersnce. but its so loud that it distorts the video on my iphone 8

Welcome to the board. 
If you're in high school and broke, I would say you've probably put yourself in something of a pickle. You're not going to be able to take any muffler off the shelf and put it, then expect it to quiet a rotary ... and last. On top of that you're posing it as a choice when you really should have both a presilencer and a muffler. 2.5-inches will keep it plenty loud with both in place. If you still insist on getting just one, then get a muffler for the thing. Anything less will still likely be loud enough to have truly wasted your time and money. As far as actual parts, I would say Dynomax is probably your best bet for price point and quality. I have used that before and it lasted for years, until I got rid of the car. If you need to go cheaper still, then maybe get a Dynomax presilencer and either locate a stock muffler for that side, or get a cheap pan with the understanding that a simple backfire can literally tear it apart!

However, to your question on whether it would sound "decent", the best I can do is say ... probably. Your ideas of decent and mine may not be the same. I liked it, and a lot of my friends and local guys seemed to like it as well. Keep in mind I had a header and 2 presilencers (the old Rotary Engineering system) ahead of the 2.5-inch Dynomax I used. It was still significantly louder and lower-toned than stock (or even the original RE rear pan), but it was also civil enough to keep NYPD off my tail (for sound only) for the 3 or 4 years I had it that way.

I had a full racing beat exhaust minus the resonator/cat part, it was very quiet but also had all the right tones. Ended up swapping back and forth between that and a full 3 inch with a fart can for fun.
