Question Rebuilding Turbos..

I've looked around the forum, but I'm still not 100% sure on what rebuild kits to get for my stock turbos on my FD. One had an item number from turbo city but that item isn't listed anymore. I saw that the internals are the same as a Garrett T3, and I found the kits on Gpopshop but don't know which seal or piston ring to get or whether it matters. Need to get this stuff ordered asap...

The type of front seal depends on the compressor housing backplate. They're machined differently if they're intended for use with a carbon seal or a dynamic seal. The dynamic seal has a small piston ring like what's found on the turbine side, but the carbon seal seats completely differently. The thrust collar is also different between the applications.

I see that on gpopshop's site they list both a carbon seal and a dynamic seal kit. It's possible that the '99-spec turbos were switched over to use the updated dynamic seal, while the older turbos used carbon seals. Or maybe they just sell the dynamic seal kits for use with hybrid turbo builds. What I can tell you is that the HT-18 turbo in an FC uses the older carbon seal. I'd suggest either calling gpopshop to see if they can answer why they have two different kits, or disassembling the compressor side of the turbo(s) to take a look. There are some pictures for comparison in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ghlight=hybrid.
