re-installing tranny woes

I'm having great difficulty getting my AT trans to go back in. the car is an 83 GSL, when we took it out we removed the bell to engine bolts before we took off the tc to flywheel bolts (wrong, I now know) and of course the trann wouldn't budge. after removing tc bolts of course the trans came out. with tran out the tc just slid off the spindle easily, so what was holding it on so tight? maybe a silly question. right now I have housing bolts in on one side but the opposite side still has a two inch gap between engine and bell, just can't get it straight!!! what am I doing wrong?

u don't have the tc far enough on the shaft to engage the pump.

ok, now I do feel like a homer; when removing the tranny I removed the vacuum line from the trans itself but didnt trace it back to its origin and it popped off when we lowered the tranny. I thought finding where it had been connected to should be easy but that hasn't been the case..it is a metal(aluminum) line that the connects to a rubber line, the end is oriented to the passenger side of the engine compartment not too far from the carb. that may not be a lot to go on but is the best I can describe it. thanks!!
