question about clutch pedal sensors
question about clutch pedal sensors
Probably a dumb question, but I'm gonna ask anyway. I know the sensor at the floor that the clutch arm depresses is for the neutral start, but what is the switch that is depressed on the high side of the arm, when its not pressed in so to speak? I ask because ive been having trouble starting my car but I believe the neutral start switch is to blame. It just has a small fuzzy oval sticky type of thing on there thats on the clutch arm when it makes contact to the depressor on the safety switch that I believe is worn and not pressing it in all the way. But the depressor on the high side switch is stuck in, I don't know what that switch is or does. Also i used to go to the link on freq asked questions to view the cochran manual but now everytime i click on the link it just brings me to a vgi link. My ride is a 90 gtu na. Thanks for any help.
The switch that is pressed when the clutch pedal is released is for the cruise control. The one at the bottom of the swing is the interlock switch. If you suspect the interlock switch, you can bypass it with a jumper wire across the harness-side plug. This will just complete the circuit all the time (ie no need to press the clutch to start the car).
But the switch may not be the problem. Check through this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/ive-solves-2nd-gen-sticky-starter-mystery-896013/. The fix I detailed in post 39 fixed an intermittent start problem I was having, and is fairly common in FCs.
Edit: Fixed the broken links in the FAQ. Use either of these sources for the FSM:

Alright, i will check out that link after work today, thanks, i appreciate it. I don't have cruise control, so I guess I wont worry about that upper side switch. Is everyone that tries to view the cochran manual link getting a vgi link or is it just me and maybe my computer has gone screwy? Thanks again for the helpful info.
Interlock switch
RR88 is on target with the interlock switch.
If you can get the car to start by cycling the clutch pedal up and down a couple of times, that would point to dirty contacts on the interlock switch (or that used to work but doesn't any more, which was my clue). Using a jumper at the connector is the easiest way to confirm.
You can leave the jumper in place if you want. The car will just hop forward a little if you have a duh moment & crank the starter while in gear without pushing in the clutch (hey, it happens
).
It's also possible to remove and disassemble the switch to clean the contacts. It's good times working on your back up underneath the dash to remove it though.
Good luck with it.

Thanks you guys. I wont beable to get out there to check anything till sunday. But i did quickly just stuck a piece of doublesided tape on that little stopper piece that presses in the plunger on the switch and havnt had a problem with it so far. But im gonna clean up the switch and replace that little deal on the arm that depresses it with something alittle nicer and permanent.
