Pricey RX7 for sale near my area. What do you guys think?

I recently found a listing of an FD for sale close to my area.

93 touring FD, black on black.

Completely bone stock.

65k kms (~40k miles)

Seller is asking for $22k and won't budge about the price.

I won't have more info about the car until i take a look at it next week.

I feel the car is worth more like $18k and I am willing to pay $20k.

Even though the car is overpriced, my thinking is

1. its hard to find a clean, low mileage FD close to home (even though its got a sunroof..)
PLUS you skip the headache of arranging transport, going to another city to look at an FD, etc

2. if I buy a well-maintained FD, it will save me a lot along the way (both cash and headaches); therefore, the premium is worth it

Any advice will be helpful. Also, I apologize if I've posted in the wrong section, I couldnt find a section where to find advice for buying. Please point me to the correct section of the forum.

Thanks
Andrew

No way to know if it's a fair price without seeing the car, hearing it run and knowing the market in Canada. I agree with your logic IF it's a clean unmodified car AND you don't intend to modify it.
For more useful information, go to the FAQ sticky in the 3rd Gen. technical section and scroll down to 'B' for "Buying". Some helpful links.

Thanks for your advice Jim. I plan to do only reliability mods and do the 99spec look update.

I will take it to a mechanic I know that specializes in rotaries.

If everything is good, you think its a fair deal?

If it's that clean underneath and in the engine bay, I'd jump on it and not look back. That's a nice FD and 22k (17K US or so if it's Canadian) isn't THAT much for a clean one.

This car was for sale last year as well. Obviously it didn't sell.

22k is asking too much IMO. 18k seems to be fair in my mind for a stock FD

Lol thanks for the input guys. I did check out the car couple days ago. Its been sitting in the garage since 08 (licence plate sticker not updated since). He says he does oil changes every year or so and drives it like once a year. His mechanic is just his regular mechanic. Based on the test drive, the car prob hasnt seen a redline in years so I'm worried about carbon buildup. Also since its been sleeping away for 7ish years, the rubber will prob become brittle. Other than that, the test drive was smooth.

I'm taking it to a rotary mechanic to inspect it more thoroughly and to do a compression test.

Hope everything turns out well.

Sounds good Andrew. Hope to see you around if you get the car

I re-read your first post. Yes you got it right, alot of people seem to buy these cars for cheap but in the long run end up spending even more money to get it up and running properly. These cars are over 20 years old so getting one in good condition is ideal.

This. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten excited about a rare car out of state, arranged myself to get there, and found it to be completely different than what I thought. On the other hand, sometimes you find those widowed old ladies holding on to low mileage/rare models and selling for cheap . I would just berate the guy with questions!

Thanks 7__rocket, look forward to meeting you guys when I get my FD.

Cloud, I have asked him questions lol but he seems to know less about rx7s than I do, which is a bad sign.

I'll still give the car a chance but I'm leaning more towards the cautious side now.

Someone's gotta rescue that beast from his cage right?

I guess I should probably sell my 93 if you can get that kind of money for it.
