Premix my 12a

Hello friends.
I have a 1981 RX7 with a stock carbureted 12a. I’ve heard so much debate on whether to premix or not and I trust this community more than any other forum or reddit post. My OMP works but should I still premix? I have read that it is optional but can I premix, and would I see any benefits? If so what product should I be using? I don’t want to leave oil residue in my carb. (If that’s even possible) If anyone has answers or thoughts about this please let me know. If anyone has experience premixing with a 12a, what ratio are you using. Any help would be greatly appreciated, just trying to keep my engine happy!

Thank you,
-Mateo

There is no need to premix. I keep beating this drum; You cannot undo poor maintenance before you bought the car, and premixing now does not undo damage already done. Premixing is not a magic pill or cure. The oiling system in the 12a cars was sufficient given how stressed the engines are. I have 194k on my original engine in my 1982 and it was never premixed. Still hot starts and runs great. If you're running this around a racetrack then you might have a different argument as you/re living at high RPM and constant wide open throttle. If this is a street car then you really don't need to bother. I have an ax to grind about all this reddit and facebook misinformation about what premix can and cannot do.

That said, if you want to premix because it will make you feel better then by all means, go ahead. Typical ratios are 1:128 ounces, or 1 oz per one gallon of gasoline. Brand doesn't matter, they're mostly all the same as long as you pick one with TC-W3 rating. The walmart jug of premix does just fine and it's far cheaper than Idemitsu

I'd have to agree, under stock conditions, a properly operating oil metering pump is sufficient at lubricating the engine. I'm an original owner, now in my 44th year of continuous ownership. In addition, I've added a few more 1st gens to my stable over the years and all of them also operate off their OMP's.

In fact, 2 years ago when I bought my latest one, I was poking around when I got it home and found that the actuation rod to the pump was disconnected at the pump arm! I know the previous owner didn't drive it much in the year that he owned it and I don't know if he was pre mixing or not. I hooked the rod back up to the lever and it's been going good ever since. Has good compression too. I'm no stranger to pre mixing either. Use to do it all the time with my old 2 stroke motocross bikes and racing karts.

Thanks for your response! I love my little rotary and this one is my first but surely not the last! Happy to hear how long you’ve been driving them. How can I check if the actuation rod is connected or disconnected at the pump arm? I’d love to check just for my own peace of mind.

I'm pretty sure its hooked up. There is also a test in the manual to insure its pumping the right amount.
