Power steering pump failure in 1985 RX7 GSL.
Ok, so I just got a beautiful RX-7 on trade for my motorcycle and the only thing that's wrong with it mechanically is the power steering pump doesn't work at all.
It holds fluid, it has pressure because when you turn the wheel it will blow it out the top. My questions:
1. What are the long term effects of not having power steering? Because it's totally manageable without it.
2. Before thinking about dropping 200$ for a new pump, what are some obvious tests / things I should check?
I'm picking up the Haynes manual tomorrow, so I'll be able to tear it apart.
A little more info. The belt still spins the pump, there is no noise and no assist when turning. It doesn't leak unless it's full then when you turn it blows it out the top. If what I'm looking at is the return line, there doesn't appear to be any real filter visible from the outside, but there may be a screen inside, I'm going to check tonight.
Is there anything else that I can try? It's almost like there's no power getting to the pump, but I don't know if it needs electrical.
This is my first post and I hope it's ok. If you need more info, let me know.

You say 'this' power assist unit. I don't know which power assist unit you're referring to, I feel like I missed something.

Lives on the Forum
I think some of the autocross guys have worked out a way to disable the PS system. Something like remove the pump and the BS attached to it, then join the lines at the rack.
Not really clear on it, but maybe this will help with your search.
P.S. What part of Michigan are you in?
