over heating ?? or bad gage or sensor ?

the temp gage works normal until it gets to middle then it spikes up and down...
I hope that the car is not overheating and the gage is just to slow to react ?
what should i do? sensor

sounds like a sticking or bad thermostat. Make sure you are using the OEM Mazda thermostat and not an aftermarket Stant or some other off brand.
