Original stereo amp

Hello, I have a 87 gxl that had a coolant leak under the dash, anyway long story short, I removed the dash and found what looks like an oem amp under there. If that's the case, can I use this with a new aftermarket radio? Or should I not re-install it if I go with an aftermarket radio

The stock amps are crap anyways,so just wire the speakers to your new headunit or run the headunit to the amp with RCA wiring and then amp to speakers.

Two audio amplifiers should not be used for one signal. If you have an aftermarket stereo with amplifiers built in, do not run them to the OEM audio amplifiers. It would be good to have aftermarket speakers in that situation.

Ok thanks for the replies, sounds like I'll be better off just leaving it out when I put the dash back in

Yep, there are a few amps in the RX7s. I threw all of mine in a pile to be trashed/parted. Once you have an aftermarket stereo, they are useless .

i was wondering the same thing….

does this mean we have to run fresh speaker wire to all speakers if we bypass the amps? or is there some way to use part of the stock harness to make life easier

I imagine that the using the stock amplifiers may be okay, but audio quality could be distorted. If you remove the wires from the amp pre-amp and tie them to the post-amp, you can bypass the amplifiers. Just trash the amps after you do that. This is pretty simple to do. Make sure you crimp/solder and heatshrink/electrical tape the wires to protect from future problems.
