Old '87 owner looking to get back in

I bought an '87 brand new and owned it 4 13 great years. It was leather with after market 2+@.

I am now looking at a mint '88 convertable with 42,000 origonal miles.

My question: Once a month during the last 5 tears the '87 would not want to start - seemed to get flooded for know reason. I recal this was a known problem and a tough fix. I eventually sold the car and informed the next buyer.

This rare flooding would be corrected and the car would always start if I held the pedel to the floor. After 10 turns it would ignite and send smoke all over the neighborhoo. Any ideas what this was? It did it the last 5 years of it's life and honestly it was about monthly. Very weird but nmy wife remembers and she will want to know before I but this '88 for $7000.

The car looks mint - can these odometers be rolled back easily? 42 K seems too low. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Welcome back. What took you so long?

Flooding as you describe it can be avoided for the most part if you do not shut the car down before warming up the engine. That is, like backing it out of the garage and immediately shutting down the engine. However, there are things that can contribute to the flooding like low engine compression, leaking fuel injector and so on.

The price you state seems a bit stout, even for a "mint" condition car. [I've never seen a really mint condition car that old, BTW.] If you plan to pay the asking price, I would strongly suggest that you have a proper compression test done by an independent rotary shop. If the engine has low compression, you may need a rebuild before you would like. And if that is the case, figure on $1,500.00-$3,000.00, or more, depending on who does the work and whether or not the major components can be reused.

If you are in or near NOVA, there are a couple of shops that can do that for you. Like RP Performance for example: http://rpperformanceracing.com/.

As far as the odometer goes, I suspect that they can be set back on just about any car. Pay for a CarFax report and that may tell you whether or not it has been tampered with.

Good luck!

$7000 sounds like a lot for a convertible FC, has it been modified very much or is it fairly stock?

Thanks for the response...In 13 yeaars I can not think of an instance when I would have backed the car out of the garage and shut it off. I always baced it out and drove it. Maybe for a washing, but this car had a steady 5 year history of random flooding to which I could never corelate an event. I'm thinking maybe low compression after maybe 80k miles.

I am not in NOVA anymore but will take your advice on the compression testing. I really appreciate it.
Oh about why I went away: I bought a BMW Z4 which I owned for 5 years. It was a lot faster the the Mazda but I sold it because I live where there is no BMW service and the car was a bit much for this area - I moved to the boonies on a lake and it stood out when I went to the local Walmart
