OH odd speedo issue

i did a search on here last night about speedo issues and 95% either came up being a dead speedo or it was randomly reading 2x or greater than it should. well mine situations a little different. im getting ready to buy an 88 rx7 with the 13b engine, 5 speed. dont know much more about it, but the speedo only goes up to 40. doesnt matter if you're doing 30mph or 70mph the speedo says 40, but when you stop it goes back to 0. just by listening to the engine the tach seems to be reading right. i think the speedo is the only issue. i like to know how fast im going so this will be the first thing i fix. any help is greatly appreciated.

John

It is possible it is something as simple as a loose speedometer cable. Had the same issue myself many years ago. Or, a bad gauge. In that case it is easy to swap.

cool. thanks. hopefully its just a loose cable. i dont feel like tearing apart the gauge cluster. i've already had the cluster in my truck apart a couple times.

The RX-7 cluster is quite easy to remove, if necessary.

thats nice. nothing worse than having to remove the whole damn dash just to get your cluster out. but, is it as easy as my truck? in my truck you pull the trim from in front of the cluster, remove 4 bolts, disconnect the wiring harness in back and remove. lol.
