VA Octane and that 3000 rpm cold start

So I thought I would just ask two questions in one thread as opposed to making two threads. First off, I have read around on the forum that 87 octane is perfectly fine to use in our 2nd gen rx7s. I personally have been putting in 93 octane but just to see if there was much different I put in 89 octane the last couple fill ups. Now my car is the 91 turbo II model so I didn't know if it would be safe to put in 87 or because I have the turbo model that I should continue putting in the higher octane. So pretty much what octane should I use in the long run cause damn that gas is getting expensive?

Next, I have read that the 3000 rpm cold start is not a very good thing. I'm old school in the sense that I always let my cars warm up to normal temps before I even start pulling out of the driveway even the all the reliable cars I have had. In my manual that came with the car they say its supposed to help warm up the turbos for use faster. I don't like it so I always put it in first before starting the car so it warms up normally. Question, who lets there car rev to 3000 rpm and who doesn't? Also, am I wise to let it not do so if I let the car warm up all the way before driving?

Keep in mind that I have the turbo model so I don't know if some of what I have been reading from others is advice for non-turbo models or if these two questions have the same answer regardless of having a turbo or not.

87 octane is recommend in the owner's manual for both turbo and NA FCs. If your TII is stock, and you're seeing stock boost levels (8 psi max), you can use 87 at the minimum. Higher octane isn't bad for it or anything; it will just provide slightly better knock resistance in the event of an issue. The general rule is if you're running more boost than stock, use the highest octane available.

3k RPM start-up is to warm the pre-cat for emissions. You'll find this feature on a lot of cars. It's not as horrible as some people seem to think it is, as the engine has no load on it while free-revving to 3k RPM.

There's also no point in "warming up" any car before driving it. It's actually worse to do this than to just start it and drive it in a sane manner until it has reached operating temperatures. That's how vehicles are designed to run and why engines clearances are chosen the way they are.

makes sense. the only mod, if you can even call it that, is the K&N air filter I have installed. Everything else is stock. I guess I'll try 87 next time. And about the warm up what I meant was i usually turn it on and let it warm up for a couple minutes while I have a smoke. I don't let it warm all the way to ideal temps for driving but I never drive away as soon as I cut it on, especially in the winter.

And maybe I'm a bit noobish but what do you mean by engine clearances?
