It is a single wire with a shielded outer casing..(square connector). It usually pops out around the side of the Throttle body nearest the Firewall.
It can be hard to find, especially if someone put the Upper Intake on and left the sensor disconnected, because the connector can get trapped under there.
It's supposed to come out at the back of the UIM under the throttle body, with a single green connector.
If you can't see it, wait till the engine is cold, point a flashlight back there and from the passenger side of the engine reach your hand behind and gently start feeling around for it. That's how I found mine.
Be gentle if you are pulling it out from under the intake, because the wires are getting old and you don't want to tear them.

However, there should be enough length on the O2 sensor wire to install it first then plug it into the receiving wire. If you are struggling to make it reach, then maybe your receiving wire is snagged somewhere. Which means that if you can't free it you will either have to pull the intake to free it or cut and lengthen the wire.
My OEM replacement O2 sensor had more than enough slack to plug it in, although it is irritating to reach.

Screw the sensor in FIRST..then connect the wire!.You can use a spade connector or whatever to connect the 2 wires together.

When I first replaced my sensor, the receiving wire was pinched underneath the UIM. I could only plug it in by pulling it towards the top of the TB (as far as it would go), plugging it in, and then screwing in the sensor. Only after I redid the intake was I able to free the wire (still not sure what it was stuck on).
Thanks again, I did replace the O2 sensor first. I don't believe the old one was connected. I can just about see the connector from the rear top of the engine. My hands are too big to get under all the vaccum hoses. I think I am going to try removing some of the hoses to get access. The wire from the new O2 sensor is long enough to reach the receiveing connector. The problem is the connector is bearly visable and I need to hold it to connect the O2 sensor. I wonder why Mazda made this so difficult!
