Not Charging

i am having a problem with my charging system on my RX-7. I remove the battery wire and the car cuts off. Start the car and check the voltage at the battery and its 12.3 volts. i replace the alternator and the same thing happens, and still gets 12.3 volts at battery. Can someone please help. Any thoughts. Thanks

And removing the battery is NOT a valid nor safe test!

If your car is EFI, then removing the battery raises the voltage of the alternator to dangerous levels.

Carbureted cars with points could tolerate this. Very bad for electronic systems.

But if you've already replaced the alternator, then there are a few areas to check. More if we knew what year the vehicle was.

Wire from alternator to batter/fuse panel? Older cars had a fusable link. Newer ones connect to a main fuse.

2 pin connector at back of alternator? Make sure that it is making good contact, and check the voltage as per the FSM for your car to make sure the field is being powered.

If it's an OLD 1st gen it has an external regulator. Might be bad.

12.3v when off and when running, on two differnt alternators smells like a funky output cable. Alternately, there's an excellent chance your new alternator is a dud, especially if it's from Autozone
