normal temp 1st generation?
Hello,
1.My 1984 (1st Gen) runs close to 1/2 way up the temp guage. It hasn't passed the half way point. Normal?
2. Oil in coolant - Ive seen posts regarding this....pointing to simple issues like an overdue flush and coolant change to rebuild necessities. There is ALOT of oil in the resevoir, seems to be losing a fair amount of coolant, as well as smoke coming from engine (passenger side). Going thru fair amount of oil also. Not sure if related. Obviously could be many things, but if anyone has thoughts about these in relation to 1st gens would be great.
Thanks!

Jim,
1) As far as i know the temp should never pass half way! Mine stays just under half way. The rotary engine has to be cooled very good. If you want to be sure then it's better to instal a seperate temp gauge because the original one is not perfect. In my FC the temp never passed 65c and the Fb about 70c. So if it doesn't pass half way it is good.
2) I think you're rotary has an internal problem. It should use some oil, that's normal but the way you subscribe it i fear the worst.....

ur temp reading is as it should be. check around the intake where it meets the block to see if there's coolant leaking at the O rings. that's probably why the lose of coolant and smoke. it's leaking down onto the exhaust. to my knowledge there's no way for oil to get into the coolant. now if u have an auto tranny, then that oil is tranny fluid leaking from the cooler inside the lower rad tank.
