No start Diag.

So anyway like i posted in my intro, I am having a little difficulty with starting. The car has a new fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. It had been sitting for 6 years previous to this. I know it is getting fuel, but in order to start it for the first time in the morning i have to pour a little gas down the carb. After that i can turn it on and off as i please, even let it sit for 40 min to an hour and it still starts just not the next morning.

Any ideas???

Does the car run normally? Does it ever flood? I'd suspect you've got a slight fuel leak, which would drain your float bowls overnight. Even if you don't smell fuel, the carb could leak into the manifold. Does it make any difference if you turn the key to run and let it prime the pump for a minute or two?

Carbs that sit that long almost always need a rebuild due to the fuel that evaporates, leaving a varnish like goo plugging any and everything up. The rubber parts, such as the vacuum lines, fuel lines and accellerator pump diaphram also dry out and deteriorate. Not to mention rust that can leave pinhole leaks in the fuel hardlines. It took a while but I finally found a pinhole leak on the short hardline between the tank and fuel pump that bolts to the backside of storage bin of my widebody.

Start by removing the air cleaner lid and operating the throttle to see if the accellerator pump jets are squirting a good stream into both primary barrels. If not, rebuild the carb. While you're at it, disconnect the fuel lines from the carb, pump and tank, squirt them full of carb cleaner, then blow out with compressed air. Drain the fuel tank. If you get rust particles, it may be time to drop the tank, have it boiled then resealed. Any radiator shop should be able to boil the tank, the rest you can do yourself.

Since you have an 85, the pump won't run with key on only. Power goes through a relay so the pump is only energized if the key is in start mode or the trailing ignition closes the circuit when the enine is running. What fuel pump did you buy? In the following you will find the online FSMs and other rotary reading naterial. Download and start reading, enjoy.

yeah i am thinking the carb needs to be rebuilt. I drained the tank already the gas was a little gross smelling, but no noticeable rust. filled it with new gas a little fuel system cleaner. I will have to get someone to give me and hand and see if the jets are squirting, i was kinda thinking it was the accelerator pump.

Thanks for the tips, guess i am in for a carb rebuild. How are they to rebuild??? Only ever rebuilt a couple olds quadrajets.

You can check the accellerator pump by removing the air cleaner, move the throttle shaft and look for 2 healthy, even squirts of fuel, one in each primary venturi. The old quadrajets are childs play compared to all the crap on the Nikki carbs. The link I gave for the FSMs also has the factory carb manual. If you decide to rebuild yourself, take lots of pics. Oddly, the Haynes Manual has a decent carb rebuild section.
