Newb question
Hi everyone, my name is Nathan and i'm and alcoholic... sorry wrong place. haha
I live in Lima, OH (previously Charlottesville, VA) and I've been lurking here for a few years since i was looking for my first car which i was considering buying an rx7 (ended up with a white 92 Miata). I currently have a 1991 Mazda Miata SE BRG. however some idiot in a 95 chevy caprice decided to total it for me. but thats a whole other story. I am considering picking up a FC TII. I found one a few weeks ago, and i've been talking to the guy. He only wants 800 for it, my first question just like yours i'm sure was "what's wrong with it?" his answer was, it needs an engine rebuild. My first thought was apex seals. According to the guy, i was wrong. He told me that it is the seal/gasket that is between the rotor housings. Can someone tell me the "technical" name for that gasket? i've googled and searched the forums and i can't seem to find that gasket (if it exists?).

Coolant seals. Basically the rough equivalent to a head gasket, but since the engine is a sandwich, the whole thing has to come apart to replace them. You can take a look at the rebuild kits available through atkins, but this is also just one source. It looks like they include the coolant seals in the "overhall gasket kit".

i assume that the coolant seals are the same thing as the water jacket seals?
BTW picked up the car today. as i expected, the body is a bit rough, but the frame solid with barely any surface rust. got it for $700.

if you are planning on doing the rebuild yourself look into the pineapple racing HD water seals. Good things have been said and Rob claims they can stand up to some overheating w/o failing.

He could also be referring to a dowel o-ring, which is a semi-common issue on engines that have been run constantly hot or are just plain old. Either one requires disassembly.
Note that if it is a coolant o-ring, you may open the engine and find nothing usable due to rust.

thanks!

EDIT: btw Aaron, i very much like your "user title" i am constantly correcting people on the difference between a motor and an engine! haha
