new RX7 FD TT owner Q

Well I own two datsun 240z turbos.

My little brother is going to pick up hid new 94 FD twin turbo May 1st in Dallas TX ( we live in Houston).
We arnt rotary or Mazda guys but have always had a killing desire for a FD....so we satisfyed our cravings and found a original owner that is Willing to part.

Hw claims to have all service records and that Motor and turbos have been rebuilt from rotary performance out side Dallas 3100 miles ago. Car is completely stock except for the pre cat delete. Car is a 5 speed, 4 piston factory calapers, bose sound system, tan Suade factory seats, chrome/polished? Factory wheels & new paint job/clear coat (factory red) . Car has 113000 miles on chassis.
That car is freakishly clean!!!

Wanted to get him something for his Birth day for the car.... throughout the resurch I have done it seem that you can't just go turning boost up more the 12 psi without "power FC", fuel pump, intake, exhaust, intercoolers, injrctoirs blah blah...

He w ant to pay the loan back to the credit union before he mods for more power ( looking for 425-450whp)

I got him a set of Defi gauges (boost, water, oil pres) & AEM wide band guage.
any upgrade ideas for 600-800.00 budgets?

Also looking for feed back and opinion over rotary performance and the reputation?!?!

i'm not a third gen expert but i would say with a budget of $600-800 i would start with a full tune up with all fluids and filters. Then i would do reliability mods, these won't necessarily increase power but will help keep your car running strong for as long as possible

I wouldn't buy anything now. You have the pre-cat delete (very important) and full service records. RP does good rebuilds, but a full listing of *everything* that's been replaced over the life of the car is also very important. Get a compression test and have the car looked over for overall engine health.

3rd gens wear out more parts than most cars. It sounds like this car could be very well kept, but at 113k there are a lot of things that will need replaced - suspension, cooling system, electrical, in addition to the basic fluids and filters. Just the nature of the highly optimized performance beast.

Put aside your cash, get to know the 3rd gen maintenance and reliability mods, and get to know the car for a while. Then go over the service records and other stuff and see what might be good to do next. Never rush the power mods or boost increases.

425 whp on stock twins will be all but impossible....even with a standalone. You and your brother REALLY need to study the 3rd Gen. stickys, search the 3rd Gen. section on particular subjects and get realistic for your budget.
Follow degeesaman's suggestions, outside of reliablity mods don't do ANYTHING to the car. At least not for a good long while.
That's not what you wanted to read, but that's what you need to do.

Oh, yeah 425+hp is a sizeable number for an FD. Nothing about the stock fuel system, cooling system, turbochargers, boost control, ECU, clutch, or boost control system will get you there. 400+ hp is a pretty modified single turbo car with about $10k worth of mods to be done well. $5k if you're a really good mechanic with an eye for good deals on used parts.

Sorry should have been more spacific toward power goal, we dont plan to use stock turbos or turbo to reach that power leve.
I have been reading up on the FD a lot latly and seems the stock TTs will hold 380 max.
With that being siad my brothers plan is to pick the car up and head over to RP for a tune up, compression check, and so on.

He just wants to drive the car and enjoy what it is and has to offer from a stock stand point untill he pays the load back to the credit union (should have it payed off this year) at witch time he want to invest in the susspension(cusco/megan/apexi coilovers), handaling(bushings/sway bars/ties), braking(greddy 6-4 piston brake kit), and wheels (polished CCW classics/ bronze Volk TE37s) of the car, then build motor and more power.
were into road racing and auto crossing, so seems like this car will be a good pick for such.

Hes the kind of person who buys everything he wants then swaps or builds that spec of the car, he dosnt like bolting piece by piece and going.

Hes looking forward to being a FD owner and talks dialy of May 1st (his birthday is April 29th turning 19)
Any help or pointers ( from people who know what ther talking about) is always disired.

Good luck to you and your brother. It's good that he intends to pay the loan off before doing any performance modifications. But it's just kind of strange that he's doing a compression check AFTER buying the car.
Regardless, you do know that what you've described as far as planned performance mods...fuel, ignition, single turbo, cooling, management, suspension, IC and intake, exhaust, wheels and tires...will probably easily exceed the cost of the car. No offense, but that's alot for a 19 yr old. It's not unusual for guys that age to have Ferrari dreams on a Fiat budget.

what to upgrade

Personally I'm a fan of what Pettit Racing does. They've been my go-to experts since 1995 when I got my first FD. (I have no affiliation with them other than being a customer.) I would trust their advice over the random enthusiast hack who talks like he knows, but his car is never on the road.

Best to have a reliable motor, so I'd start with all the basic maintenance items, even though its not sexy to begin with, but it could save your motor in the long run:

-plugs
-fuel filter
-replace stock air separator tank
-fluids (diff + trani + coolant + motor oil)
-replace stock fan switch
-oxygen sensor
-boost gauge
-grounding points
-always run 93 oct gas with a rotary fuel lube in the gas ("pre-mix"; many diff brands will work fine)

When thats all solid, then upgrade, one at a time:
-cold air intake
-complete exhaust
-pulley system
-intercooler (relocate battery)
-radiator
-clutch + flywheel
-rims/tires
-suspension
-short shifter
-ECU
-street port engine
-upgrade turbos
-water injector

^^ At least thats how I did mine.

Thanks for the inputs.

I got him a foot in the door at my job, so at his age yes its unique for him to have
These options but he's in school & working full time living with mom and dad, so he can afford to save half his checks(making 31k year) and progress hid FD.

We may try and check the compression before handling the title and cash, ill ready up on how to go about it I'm suee it on here somewhere.
And if he really has paper work to prove the rebuild (pics are nice too) we may just not eorry to much over it.
Time will tell.

Brother has had the car for 3 weeks now.
Car is stunning strong....turns on every day and seems happy.
Definitely needs more power...were used to ducati 848s and 10 sec 240z's....in time we
Will upgrade this rebuilt motor to it'd limits (with reson.
When its seen better days and needs rebuild, we have a LS3 setting in
The garage to play with ;-).

Will keep updated on mods and progress.

Overall fantastic Mazda and we are impressed with amount of fun we
Have driving this FD as is. Great buy!
