new owner help! please

Hi! Im new here and just recently bought an 83' rx7 with the 12a. The car will only run when dumping gas/ starting fluid in carb. Fuel pump is making noise but seems to me gas is not getting to the carb. I took off the main line from drivers side of the carb and gas not coming out!? there was two lines and i took out the large bolt and still no gas coming out? Is this most likely my lines gunked up or could i still be getting gas and maybe carb gunked up? She will only run for a few seconds till the gas i dumped in gets burned.....car was last ran about a year ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Replace the fuel filter first. Next, turn the key so that the idiot lights come on and then stick your head under the car right in front of the driver's side rear wheel. That sucker should be humming. After you've shut off the ignition and pulled the keys out, you're going to have to unbolt the shield around the fuel pump because you need to test the gas coming out from that point. Run used hose from the output end of the fuel pump and then see if it will spit out gas into a small bucket when the key is inserted back into the ignition and turned to the idiot light stage again.

If you have fuel coming out from there and not at the carb, something's in the lines. If no fuel is coming out even from there AFTER the fuel filter has been replaced, then it's either a dead pump that just sounds ok or you've got rust scale loose in the tank and the fuel line from the pick-up in the tank to the fuel fuel pump is clogged with the junk....

Thanks for the help Mar3, turns out it just needed a fuel filter and something seemed to be in the pickup because i had to blow the line coming from the tank which seemed to free up and begin to flow normal. Started her up for the first time in a year and ran like a top. Next ill be doing a full tune-up. Hopefully whatever was clocked doesnt stop my flow again....at some point ill pull the tank and do a clean. thank you for the help! ~

Well, I don't want to jinx you or anything, but there's a real world reason I knew that...I had an '84 that started and would run but would die whenever the fuel level got low or in hard right hand turns...I eventually "solved" this problem (after I had replaced the fuel filter and then threw in a new Facet fuel pump...) by having the gas tank pulled by a shop and then sent out to a place that cleaned the guts, dipped it and then recoated the interior before re-installing the tank. Never had a problem after that except for the pain in my wallet...
