TX New FD Owner

Hey all, I'm picking up a 1993 rx7 today. Its been a car that for a long time have wanted but just intimidated by owning a rotory car. I found a FD and picked it up for a steal... Its clean inside and out. It does have a couple issues though.

It runs, It idles. No leaking fluids fars as i can see. No smoke from exhaust. Car was sitting for 6 months (which is what i think caused the problem) but it doesnt seem to get into boos. It seems like there is a clogged vaccum line or a boost leak. It will drive fine, wont die but under load just doesnt run right at all.. Any ideas?

Im in San antonio tx, so if anyone local would like to help me diagnose this issue I wouldnt mind throwing out some food and a few beers as payment! haha.

Anyways, Glad i finally picked up my FD and it will get alot more seat time than my z33 im sure.

Dustin

Start with the cheapest things first. In stock form there's a coupler from the 'Y' pipe to the crossover...located just above the turbos. That coupler is is exposed to alot of heat and will fail/leak. Hopefully it's still in relatively stock form and you can also methodically look everything over and compare it to info in this link http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/rx7stuff.htm and the Factory Service Manual (FSM).

Regardless, congrats on the purchase. I recommend you go to the 3rd Gen. section, open up the FAQ sticky and spend a week or so reading. Lot's of good info, especially for the new owner.

Welcome to the wild world of FD ownership! SgtBlue gave a great suggestion. When I first bought my FD that coupler barely came off and the car did not run right. You could also make certain the line didn't come off your MAP sensor but that doesn't sound like the issue.

If it has problems was it really a steal? =) Haha.

You can also test your stock BOV's and make sure they are operating correctly. In the 3rd Gen FAQ section is a "how to" on this.

This seems to be the truest stament when it comes to fd's!!

Thanks for all the info. And I already found out I need to replace coolant seals! Looks like the guys at Alamo rotary had their hand on this with the previous owner.

Yes it's a steal, I was about to buy a fd that was gutted and everything was next to the car instead of in it.... This was together and running, poorly, but running none the less. I'd hate to divulge what I paid for it. But yes, it was a steal. I'll post some pics up in the next few days. Very clean very well documented one owner car.

I'll look into these things and see what I can come up with. I did eliminate a boost leak, ir I rev it it will build boost and the bov will actuate when the tb closes. Now I'm thinking clogged/crossed vacuum line. Might check map sensor, clean out maf and get codes scannded to see exactly what it's throwing. Either way, I'm happy I'm finally a fd owner.

Awesome. Sounds like you've got the right attitude to own one of these cars.

What made you realize you needed to replace the coolant seals out of curiosity?

I wanted to hear it idle, rough/slow start up, but the exhaust smells sweet. Burning coolant... Mainly I wanted to see if perhaps tha map sensor was making it run rich or, but sweet exhaust smell and small puffs of white smoke/steam.

You can pull your own codes.... http://www.fd3s.net/engine_codes.html
And you have a MAP sensor, so no MAF to clean.

Ok so I got the code and it just threw code 46 over and over

46.....Variable Resonance Induction System Solenoid Valve 2, or Solenoid Valve - Charge Relief (RX7)

So basically, I need a new bov and to replace the on off solenoid for the seq pre boost nonsense correct? Does anyone have a pic of this solenoid? Thanks

I don't think you need a new BOV.
Check the first link I gave you for trouble-shooting the sequential system. If there's not a picture in that link, IIRC there's one in the FSM which will also tell you where to find it.
You may need a new charge relief solenoid, but it operates on vacuum. So the first thing I would do is make sure it has a line attached and the harness connector is secure.

Well, after pricing new solenoids and hoses from the dealer, I'd rather single turbo!! Haha prolly start that in a few weeks.

I'd say I Spent half a day reading and. Couple hours watching a video of a 13b tear down and rebuild. As far as reading, that was just to cover the intake/turbo side of things. What a jumbled up mess IMO, that's another reason I decided to go with a single turbo. Seems to be less down time and easier to locate issues when they arise on that side of things. Plus eliminate that nest of vacuum lines. I'll be sure to creat a build thread as thing start progressing. For now I have to wait a week before I can see a kit (after fab) and start things up. I found this guy local, and if all works out and he has a nice kit, if you are interested, I'm sure we could all get great prices because the amount if interest, but that's on down the line...

LoL, 5 posts in and I'm talking about a single turbo group buy!
