NEW FD- GOING for light mods

Hi there guys i am new in the rx7 world and just bought an fd last month, the engine is brand new and everything else is fine, but due to the heat factors in our country i was thinking of a v mount intercooler and a aluminum racing radiator.. i want the fd to be cool. as i have already learnt from previous experiences that stock water temp gauges oil temp gauges in most cars are just complete JUNK...

1. would a vmount intercooler require to remove air pump, if so what do i need to do that??

2. we dont have any sort of emission problems in bangladesh and i want to get rid of the cat.. would there be boost spikes ??? ( i already have greddy profec type s boost controler installed)

3. boost of the car is lowerd than stock due to the fuel that we get.. is max 91 ron..
therefore boost is at 7-5-7..

4. some people say i need to upgrade the computer of the car before removing the cat as it can lean out the afr... ???

Is your car stock? If it is stock then get a downpipe (removes the precat), upgraded radiator , and aluminum ast should do.

1. If you are removing the cat, may as well remove the air pump.

2. When you get rid of the cat just get a nice big wastegate to prevent the boost spikes.

3. Get rid of that sequential and go single.

4. the wastegate will prevent lean afr. See 2..

ok guys, as far as i know i dont have a precat i am not sure though the model of my FD is 1998 type-r special edition..

according to both of you guys removing the cat wont harm the car right ??

and how to remove the airpump is it just that i use a smaller belt to run the rest of the accesories... or do i need to buy a new pulley kit or something.... would removing the airpump lead to any other problems...

oh another thing, i will be buying a power fc soon.. any heads up on that ??

Freeing up the exhaust will lead to boost creep if left unchecked. Any exhaust mod should be paired with a ported or aftermarket wastegate. You will need a dual belt alternator pulley if I remember but I don't have an fd so you'll need to do some research.

If you plan on giving your car "power upgrades" then yes I'd reccomend it. If you plan on just doing the realibility mods that i mentioned in my previous post then the power fc would be a bit overkill.

The Profec S will give you complete control of boost levels and is fast enough to prevent boost spikes. Any time you change mods you'll want to check boost settings, and if you make a big change turn it down and readjust back up to where you want it.

As for the pre-cat in the downpipe, that was only found in FDs going to North America and parts of Europe. If your car came straight from Japan it does not contain a catalyst and then it's ok to leave the stock downpipe.

If you remove the main cat and make other mods, at some point you may find the Profec cannot control boost for more than a couple seconds. This is called boost creep, and it's caused by having too little resistance to airflow in the intake and exhaust compared to the size of the wastegate in the turbochargers. It's some labor, but not complicated to remove the turbos and grind the wastegate port larger.

V-mount is fine, but on that small amount of boost you should also be fine with a good stock mount that will save you a lot of money. You definitely want to change the radiator and all of the cooling system hoses if that hasn't been done in the last 5 years.

You should be fine with the stock ECU until you find yourself able to run above 10psi. The reason is more to do with tuning for your fuel and better overall operation than to provide cushion for mods.

Given the fuel you have, I suggest you look into auxiliary injection systems. It does a tremendous job of suppressing knock and allowing high horsepower. Guys are using it to make high power 2-rotors run safely on pump gas where they could only use race gas before. So on a less powerful setup, a small volume AI kit should allow you to get much more out of the 94RON fuel than you are now.

Dave
