Need some direction

I had a 1984 GSL 12a donated to me and i got running for a day and since then have made the stupid mistake of making a too many changes at once.(thinking some of the changes would be really simple) proved me wrong.

1) replaced the fuel pump
2) rebuilt the carb
2) installed a custom exhaust(similar to a RB)
3) pulled out the rats nest and emissions systems(as per
reading many threads here and a tutorial from.... well somewhere else)

but here's the big problem, went to go start it up and have a couple of problems,

once start she revs really high for about 1-2 secs then starts to stall out unless i tap the gas and then goes back to the high revs. what have i done?

Also to top things off since I've taken the rats nest out I've lost my tachometer on the dash for some reason?

anyways I'm at a loss... I've read a lot of the posts here for the last two months and have been amazed at the information available and it's helped me to understand tons of problems but I just want to enjoy the last of the summer cruzing around and have been curbed for far to long...

thanks for any help with the above.

It is very easy to mess up a carb when rebuilding it. My guess is that you adjusted something wrong while doing this and that is causing you're idling problems. I chased similar problems on my motorcycle (4 carbs ) for months...

As for you're tach I'm almost certain that is because you ripped out the signal wire while removing all the other wiring. Consult the factory wiring diagram and run you're own wire to the appropriate connectors.

I need to get my car on the road too...

There is a nice writeup on Sterling's site that walks you through the process of setting the idle speed and mixture. There is also a forum where you can ask the expert questions about your carb. www.sterlingmetalworks.com

But for your specific problem, it sounds like you've got a huge vacuum leak....

So did a once over Carl's rat's nest removal tutorial and everything is plugged/connected properly, although I did notice that one of the hoses from my charcoal canister is not connected( looking into that right now) agreed there is probably a leak... just ARGH not a fun proposition to find (thanks Kentetsu)

Next on the list is to see about the tach, off to the Haynes i goes :P (thanks BomberMan) hopefully will find something...

thanks again for the tips,

your tach is fired off of your trailing ignition coil. that'll give you a start on where to chase wires.
