Need help with problematic car!¡!

I bought my car(1983 GSL standard) a year ago ran beautiful. Took it on a 500km trip came back, started it and the ideal wasn't normal. Tryed Troubleshooting it,couldn't find a thing. Then one day Tryed starting it no power changed battery and the bought an ALT. Since then I have went threw 3 ALT's. Then about three weeks ago I started it up and it caught fire in the intake/exaust. No damage was found but now I have almost no pressure plate. I have to pump it for 20 minutes to be able to put it in gear. It drives for maybe 10 minutes then it will not go into any gear. If anyone can help that would be very appreciated

Sounds to me like you have a couple problems.

Your not being able to shift could be caused by a going out pilot bearing. Do you hear noises from the trans area when you press the clutch in? If so, thats it.

I don't know why your alternators would be dying.

Sounds like the fire burnt the part of the hydraulic clutch system. I'd look into replacing both the clutch master and slave cylinders along with the rubber clutch hose. Near the alt, there are 2 plugs that are nearly identical, one's for the alt, the other isn't. If the 'other' is plugged into the alt, the battery will not charge.

As far as the idle, that could be any number of things. Have you had the air cleaner base off? If so, there is a hose, approximately 3/8" dia. that's connected to the bottom of the air cleaner base. If it isn't connected, engine will not idle correctly and usually die.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, download your model year, along with the wiring diagram. Enjoy.
