Need help asap

Okay so I am decently new to owning a rotary and I’ve had and issue that will not go away. When I am driving normally my car is just fine but when I apply moderate to heavy gas a check engine like will pop up and when I try to give it more gas again it runs like it’s getting starved of fuel. Then if I shut the car off and then turn it back on it goes back to normal until it heavy on the gas again. It will happen bad on highway or in 3rd or higher gears but in 1st and 2nd I’m able to bring it to rev limiter almost.

You have posed a good question. I have looked through my shop manual, and did not find anything close to what you are experiencing in the troubleshooting section. Despite that, I would recommend starting at the the cheapest solutions first. Have you thought about replacing the fuel filter? After I purchased my 1990 RX-7 N/A convertible back in 2016 with 128,800 miles, that was one of the first maintenance projects completed. I figure a dirty fuel filter may hamper fuel flow and create a fuel starvation condition. Possibly, you should check the fuel pressure. Another option would be to have the air flow meter checked/tested. Fuel injection systems are complicated in my opinion, so it would be valuable to purchase a repair manual and pour through the fuel system chapter to go through the various checks to isolate the problem. Just wanted to take a "stab" at this situation to point you in the right direction, hopefully, until one of more experienced rotary gurus can give you more helpful and detailed advice. Best of luck!

Should try seeing what the check engine light is for. Search on how to get it to flash and count the flashes to get the code.

welcome to the board.

first, congratulations on the car. you should post up some photos when you get a chance.

so you'll probably want to start here: Foxed.ca. you can a copy of your FSM there, it will be very handy in the times ahead.

both pieces of advice above me are worth looking into, but i think you need to start with DR Knight's first. see what that CEL is about and proceed from there. my first instinct when i hear this sort of thing is the car is going into limp mode, and my next thought is usually a malfunction of your E-MOP. i've never owned a S5 car, so i don't know if OBD keeps the light on or not, but it's my first guess. the part that makes me less confident in saying it is that it sounds like you're getting speed out of the car and you're really not supposed to be able to.

for a CEL that flashes, i usually think misfire, so that could be a possibility as well. you'll have to check your ignition components.

again ... check and see what codes you have. no need for you (or anyone here) to guess.

lastly, here is some unsolicited advice ... if you see the CEL and the car is symptomatic (whether random or patterned), it would probably serve you best to not try and force/push the car. it increases your chance of actually turning a small problem into a big problem, or a big problem into a fatal problem.
