motor number location for FD engine?..
Hello all, I am new here, and come from a world where I look at numbers of motors and so on. As a collector of cars, these type of things interest me.
Is it possible to identify if my car ( 95 RX7) has it's original motor? I have 2 of these, 1 I am sure, the other I am not certain. It appears that motor swaps are commonplace on these cars. Can someone direct me to where exactly numbers would be if they do indeed exist.
If they do, is there any way to follow a sequence to see if this is the motor a particular car was built with?
Thank you for any help
Rich

well, kind of? Is there any identifying numbers on it? I know I sound like I am planning a motor heist, but I just wanted to see any production numbers at all. Not casting or part numbers, some sort of sequential number, even if it is not an abbreviated vin or any thing that ties to the vin. I find it odd that Mazda would not have a way to identify their motor in 95.
I would think that for warranty they would want to see what motor the car was born with.
Maybe I just spent too much time in the Mopar world!!

nah..No sequential numbers..they just come with 13b stamped on them and are Identified by the Housings, irons,Front covers, etc.
I'm an Fc guy and know that the S4 and s5 housings have different spark plug locations variations..
The FD,well I wont venture anything there as I do not dabble in them.can't afford that anyways...lol!
Maybe the "Sarge" will bust in and give you some info.
I just edited your Title to show FD.

I wasn't certain, but did find this....
1. the number is STAMPED into the front iron, on top, it'll be to the left of the alternator.
2. the engine number will NOT match the vin, or any other number on the car. even if it is the original one.
3. in theory mazda japan has the engine number in their file, but depending on the build date it may not be available, as they didn't go computer until sometime in the early 90's. i was able to call mazda usa with a european vin number and they contacted japan, and would have given me the key code if they had it.
4. if the front iron was replaced with a NEW one, it will not have a stamp

well thank you. I now know where to look. And it sounds like if I call Japan, and they research the archives, there may be a way to find the original front iron. I guess it is not that important at this stage of the game, but still I will look.
Thank you very much for the useful information.
