manual or ??? boost controller
Hi, as i don't have a catalyst anymore and that i will have my fuel cut defender tomorrow, i believe i still have to have a way to manage my boost before wanting to push hard on the throttle.
therefore, i believe i need a boost gauge (isn't the stock one sufficient ?) and a boost controller.
I see manual boost controller that are amazingly cheap and computerized (?) ones that seems to be plugged on aftermarket ECU like apexi's or hks's ones and that are amazingly expensive.
what do you recommand ? i'm not planning on driving a power monster, just a street car that sounds good and makes me happy. I believe the biggest the drawbacks on the manual boot controller are that you can't adjust them on the go and have to have many test drive in order to adjust the correct boost you want to apply. other than that, is it as reliable as the expansive ones ? Do you know recommanded items or items to avoid ?

needs more track time

You are treading dangerously. No cat removes a restriction that would otherwise help maintain boost at manageable levels. No cat + a FCD w/o supporting tuning and fuel could be troublesome.
I'll wait for some FC guys to comment further.
Might want to read the 2nd gen FAQ thread to learn about some of this on your own.

http://hallmanboostcontroller.com/index.html It's the only way to go.
Oh and you can get it with the incab cable for adjusting on the go.

Top Down, Boost Up

Are you buying an FCD because you were hitting fuel cut (8.6psi) after removing the cat?
I do not recommend Racingbeat/HKS/homemade FCDs to anyone. They alter the boost signal to the ECU, and negatively affect fuel delivery. A simple Rtek 1.5 chip is a far better route: http://www.pocketlogger.com/index.php?pid=rtek7
If your car has a stock fuel system, do not run more than ~9 psi. Above that point, the fuel pump's flow rate will take a dive, and primary injectors will max out before the secondaries can come online. Get a boost gauge. The stock one does not read high enough.
Boost controllers DO NOT lower boost. If you're boost creeping due to a free flowing exhaust, no boost controller will be able to help you keep it in check.

Ok i believe i have to add Some More details. First, i'm having a rtek 1.5, not a specific fcd. So i think i'm good on this point. Second point is that i'm not Power hungry. I change the exhaust cause the former was heavily rusted. So the main purpose of the boost controller will be to keep the pressure in a reasonable range. So for the moment with stock injector and stock fuel pump, what do you reckon is the best choice? 8 psi ? What is the stock value ?
