Lack of Power problem.

Hello,
I just bouht a 1988 Rx-7 conv. It is sort of lacking power, and takes a while to accelerate. I feel like I am using to much petal and no getting the power out of it. I cleaned the intake manifold and used mass air sensor cleaner on the MAS. Any suggestion? What I am going to try next is to change the fuel filter, then fuel pump, then primary and secondary injectors. One at a tme until the problem is fixed for I have replaced all those parts. Any suggestions or cautions, warnings?

The next step would be a compression check.

Remember the 1988 RX-7 convertible is not a fast car. It normally was an 8 second 0-60 time and a 16 second quarter mile. Many newer cars including newer family cars are faster than a stock RX-7 convertible.

So make sure that you really have a lack of power vs the cars normal power.

I see. I will have to get a compression test next then.

You should also check that the auxilliary port actuators are working. When I first bought my car, they didn't work at all, and this was with a stock exhaust system. On S4s, exhaust pressure is fed to a pair of actuators on the lower intake manifold (LIM). This pressure is supposed to open the additional intake ports at 3,800 rpm, and results in about 25 more hp available in the top end. More info here: http://mazdarx7.iougs.com/intakeair.shtml (bottom of the page).

If your exhaust system has been opened up at all, it's likely they are not going to be functional. The options are to temporarily "wire them open", or go with an electronic activation method (rpm switch & solenoid).

I just read that page. I have an exhaust leak by the manifold. I need a new gasket. I suppose this is causing my lack of power in my engine. Any thoughts?
