Knocking noise only in 1st gear!

I have seen this situation posted when I was looking through the site ealier... basically I have a knocking noise in first gear only! Every other gear is fine but that one. I am sure no matter what it is , that its going to require the tranny looked into...so if anyone has some possible things to focus on about this, I am a sponge! Send on through!

More info needed. Under what conditions does this sound occur? Accelerating? Decelerating? Coasting? Clutch in? Clutch out? Moving? Not moving?

It doesn't do it when idle, nor when in 1st gear with the clutch in...it does it when clutch out , while trying to accelerate. It then becomes a loud audible clunKing knocking noise !

Based on what you've experienced, odds are there are probably some teeth missing from 1st gear. I've had 1st gear go out on an NA transmission, and ended up having it rebuilt. It was not cheap, so if I had to do it again, I'd find a good used transmission instead. A quick way for you to check is to drain the oil from the transmission and run a magnet through it. If you find pieces of metal mixed in with the oil, something inside has broken. If you do this be sure you can also remove the fill plug, and have some 90 weight gear lube available for replacement.

wouldnt there also be metal flashings on the magnetic fill plug? or the magnetic drain plug?
